Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) announced today a new partnership with The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) that will build upon the world-class physical medicine and rehabilitation services in Qatar.
Through the partnership HMC’s patients will gain access to first-class inpatient and outpatient clinical expertise and research, leading to better recovery and patient outcomes. During a signing ceremony held to launch the partnership, Hanan Al Kuwari, PhD, Managing Director of HMC, said the event marks the beginning of an important collaboration and is a tangible example of HMC’s commitment to providing the safest, most effective and compassionate care to patients.
“Our ambition is for HMC to become an internationally recognized world-class tertiary care center for medical rehabilitation, education and research. HMC is proud to collaborate with the renowned Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago,” said Dr. Al Kuwari. “This partnership is about continuing to provide best in class rehabilitation and medical management here at Hamad through further developing our physical medicine and rehabilitation training, clinical services and research capacity.”
RIC will assist Hamad in designing and implementing system-wide enhancements across the healthcare continuum. The collaboration is an important milestone for the two health systems; HMC is the first healthcare organization outside the US to partner with RIC.
“We are honored to embark on this partnership with HMC,” said Dr. Joanne Smith, President and CEO of RIC. “We have long been the leader in providing integrated clinical services and research programs in the US. HMC’s commitment to quality care and its vision to establish the full continuum of rehabilitation services were important considerations for us in selecting our first international partner. We welcome this opportunity to collaborate closely with HMC in advancing its goal of bringing high quality rehabilitation care to the people of Qatar.”
RIC is the recognized leader in rehabilitation patient care, research and education and has been ranked the ‘Best Rehabilitation Hospital in America’ by US News & World Report for 23 consecutive years. The partnership between HMC and RIC will combine the best elements of Qatari values, innovation and skill with world-class international expertise and best practice, enhancing existing models of care.
“The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago has set the standard of care in areas such as neuroscience and musculoskeletal medicine. This is an important relationship for HMC and our patients and is another example of our commitment to bringing world-class services to Qatar,” said Mahmoud Al Raisi, Chief of the Continuing Care Group at HMC.
HMC’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department provides rehabilitation programs integrated in the continuum of care, providing inpatient, day rehabilitation and outpatient services for both acute and long-term rehabilitation patients.
Ms. Peggy Kirk, Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Operating Officer of the RIC signed the partnership agreement on behalf of the RIC. Speaking during the signing ceremony, Ms. Kirk said, “Two years ago we began our discussions with HMC for the development of the new rehabilitation hospital and community services. It was through these discussions that we learned about our shared mission and vision. It was very clear to us that we shared the same values and ultimately that we want to make a difference in the lives of individuals that have disabilities, and together I think we’ll have a very powerful outcome.”
The scope of the partnership will build upon the rehabilitation services at HMC including the patient’s journey throughout the continuum of care, address future community rehabilitation needs throughout all levels of healthcare, define patient criteria for rehabilitation services, and develop future service delivery and address inter-professional approaches, international best practice and patient-centered delivery of care.
