Qatargas and the Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA)- a member of Qatar Foundation – will jointly host a ‘Diabetes Awareness Day’ at the Qatargas Winter Camp in the Sealine area on 8th March.
This was announced at a press conference held at Qatargas’ Doha Head office today, attended by Mansour Rashid Al-Naimi, Qatargas Public Relations Manager, Dr. Osama Ibrahim, Qatargas Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Abdulla Al-Hamaq, Executive Director, Qatar Diabetes Association and Sharoud Matthis, Program Manager, Qatar Diabetes Association.
Mansour Rashid Al-Naimi, Qatargas Public Relations Manager said, “We are very pleased to partner with the Qatar Diabetes Association to organize a diabetes awareness day at our winter camp facility. Diabetes is a major health concern in Qatar and the region and requires consolidated efforts from all sections of the society to raise awareness, both in terms of preventive measures, as well as how to cope with diabetes and live comfortable lives. Our support to this event stems from Qatargas’ efforts in promoting health and community development as part of the Company’s corporate social responsibility programmes. Qatargas believes that supporting such campaigns contribute to building a healthy population, which is a key objective of the Human Development pillar of Qatar’s National Vision 2030.”
Dr. Abdulla Al-Hamaq, Executive Director, Qatar Diabetes Association said, “We are very pleased to have this joint event with Qatargas, because it reflects our belief that education is everybody’s right. And at this event, we will have a variety of educational activities that aim to reach people with diabetes and those who are at risk, and provide them with information about diabetes, how to control it and how to prevent it.”
“A sedentary life style puts us in danger of obesity and diabetes, and therefore my message is that we need to work towards decreasing the main factors of diabetes type 2, and that can be done by following a healthy lifestyle which include regular exercise, healthy food and losing weight to protect ourselves and our future from having diabetes.” added Dr. Al Hamaq.
Nearly 500 people – diabetic patients and their families, including Qatargas employees are expected to participate in the event. QDA will deliver awareness sessions on diabetes. Blood sugar tests will also be carried out. There will also be plenty of fun and games for the children including bouncy castles and other activities.
Health-related initiatives form an integral part of Qatargas’ corporate social responsibility programme. The Company has sponsored events like the first International Pediatric Congress, organised by Hamad Medical Corporation, and regularly organizes blood donation drives in cooperation with Hamad Medical Corporation. Qatargas is also a long-term sponsor of the Dream and Promise Awards Benefit, organised by the US-based Children’s Brain Tumour Foundation.
The Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) is a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF). QDA provides useful and up to date information, Health education and diet and various programs throughout the year to various segments of society that will help patients understand the reality of diabetes, ways of living with it and abidance with proper care.
Diabetes is a common chronic disease all over the world affecting all segments of society including children, women, youth and adults. It is currently one of the world’s biggest killers with over 382 million people with diabetes. The total number of diabetics in the world is expected to exceed 592 million by 2030 (International Diabetes Federation Statistics Figure). Every 6 seconds, a person dies of diabetes. In the Middle East and North Africa, 1 in 10 adults has diabetes
