As part of its social and community service initiatives, TAMANI Hotel Marina, in collaboration with Lifeline Hospital, organised a health awareness programme for the staff members and guests which focused on ways to get rid of excess weight.
The lecture was conducted by Dr. Aleem Mirza, Family Medicine Physician from the Lifeline Medical Centre in Jumeirah Beach Residence, and was followed by a BMI screening programme.
Dr. Aleem highlighted the importance of having healthy weight levels which goes a long way in keeping a number of diseases like obesity. The UAE ranks fifth in the world for the higher prevalence levels of obesity among its population, including children.
He said, “Obesity among children was more in the UAE compared with the US and it is prevalent more among women than men.” He attributed poor weight management to a variety of factors including unhealthy eating habits, sedentary lifestyle and junk food consumption. He said people can adopt some practices that can help reduce weight gain, including a walk after dinner and indulging in sporting activities and cut in sedentary lifestyle activities. He also asked the hotel employees to shorten the time of their lunch break and allocating part of it for a healthy walk.
Walid Al-Awa, General Manager, and TAMANI Hotel Marina, said, “We are keen to organize an event every month on discuss and create awareness about community issues which will benefit not just our staff members but also guests. The lecture on weight reduction for a healthy life was chosen given the prevalence of obesity in the UAE and encouraging people to adopt healthy lifestyle.”
