As a prelude to the 2014 MEFMA CONFEX, industry experts have stressed the importance of the industry’s contribution to the management of Dubai Expo 2020 and Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, whilst urging facility managers to adopt service level agreements with organisers.
In the build up to the 2014 MEFMA CONFEX, themed around facilities management during mega-events, the research assessed the cost set aside to manage facilities such as stadiums and considered the control of utilities, cleaning services and security.
The impact global events has on a local market highlights the need for agreements to consider the mobilisation and training of a temporary workforce and the installation of remote control systems.
As Ali Al Suwaidi, MEFMA Board Member, said: “Events coming to the Middle East will rely on facilities management to ensure the exhibits and activities run smoothly from the day they open to the public, to the day they close. This is a very different dynamic and demand on the industry which typically operates behind the scenes maintaining commercial and residential units. Now our industry is becoming consumer facing and operating under time pressures. Therefore we cannot replicate the two or three year agreements we have with clients for a global event like the World Cup or World Expo.”
The 2014 MEFMA CONFEX will host David Adam, Founder of Global Cities discussing the interplay between hosting major events and urbanisation. Mohammed Al Qadi, from Yas Marina Circuit will provide a client perspective discussing the FM challenges for a globally broadcasted event and Dr. Mohammad Abdul-Aziz Al-Fouzan & Dr. Zohir Mohammed Al-Sarraj will address the training of FM staff involved in large-scale events.
Speaking about the MEFMA CONFEX, Executive Director, Sinead Bridgett said: “The spotlight is on the Middle East and its constant expansion, which has attracted two of the world’s biggest events. For facilities management this represents a huge opportunity if it can adapt, innovate and position itself as a critical partner at the highest level of an organising committee. Therefore we must use the time to focus on training the workforce towards international standardization and best practice.”
The MEFMA CONFEX will also discuss the role of energy management, the use of technology in FM and the potential talent shortage in the industry.
It is organised for 10-11 March at The Address Hotel, Dubai Marina with Idama and Imdaad confirmed as Platinum sponsors.
