Hundreds of local residents gathered at Aspire Zone this weekend to participate in the season finale of the much-loved Aspire Community Leagues and the penultimate race in the Aquathon series.
The Community Leagues football tournament commenced in January and saw twelve local teams go head-to-head every Friday and Saturday at the Aspire Zone community courts, in a bid to be crowned group champions.
The sports competitions are part of Aspire Logistics’ commitment to encouraging residents to lead more active lifestyles. Registration for the upcoming volleyball and basketball tournaments is now open. The round-robin competitions will take place every Friday between March 7 and April 18.
The football finals on Friday saw ‘Hamhama’ win Group One, while team ‘Al Rahib’ took home first place in Group Two. ‘Iraq’ topped the leaderboard in Group Three in the last match of the day. The winning teams will hold on to their respective titles as group champions until the leagues re-open next year.
Riadh Haouet, captain of ‘Hamhama’, said, “We really enjoyed taking part in the Community Leagues football tournament. It was a fantastic opportunity to play against other local teams. We are looking forward to competing again next season!”
On Saturday, local residents took part in the fourth race of the Aquathon. This year, the winter series has not only proven popular among local residents, but also among employees at Aspire Zone.
Stewart Boswell, a squash coach at Aspire Academy, said, “I have taken part in five races over the last two years. I think they are a great way to kick off a Saturday morning. Aspire Zone regularly organizes events for the community, so I try to take part as often as I can.”
The Aquathon series takes place every year at Aspire Zone and comprises five stages spread across the winter months. Each competition includes a swim in the Aspire Dome pool and a run around Aspire Park. Entry is open to both men and women, with each event featuring races of varying distances for juniors aged eight to 15, adults aged between 16 and 39, and veterans who are 40 and over.
The third Aquathon series will conclude on March 22. Overall winners will be decided on a best three out of five races basis.
