Cypriot President welcomed by QIB Chairman

The President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, has met with the chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank – His Excellency Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jaber AI Thani, on his official visit to the State of Qatar.

The meeting was attended by His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry along with his Cypriot counterpart Mr. Yiorgos Lakkotrypis Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism. Also in attendance were Mr. Constantinos Petrides, Under Secretary to the President of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office and members of QIB’s senior management team.

Their meeting was described as highly productive promoting mutual benefits for the financial and business communities of Qatar and Cyprus. The potential to support Cyprus in preparing the framework and the required legislation in order to be able to benefit in the future from Islamic finance tools and instruments, such as Sukuks, has been explored. Opportunities for further collaboration in the energy and electricity sectors in Cyprus have been also discussed.

QIB’s Chairman Sheikh Jassim confirmed the support of the Bank to Cypriot companies which already have or plan to establish a presence in Qatar and is looking forward for further business flows between Cypriot and Qatari companies.

Follow-up meetings have been agreed, scheduled to be held in Cyprus in the near future, for both parties to discuss further all identified opportunities.

Mr. Anastasiades and H.E. Sheikh Jassim exchanged appreciation for the visit and the productive discussions. Both parties are looking forward to a close relationship to be developed.
