Dubai Municipality and Environment Centre for Arab Towns (ECAT), in collaboration with Panasonic Marketing Middle East & Africa (PMMAF) have organized a range of programmes and activities to create awareness of environment conservation on June 5th – World Environment Day 2014. The grand opening of the activities will be held on 5th June in Dubai Mall, Souk Hall at 6.00 pm.
‘The move comes as part of DM’s commitment and keenness to promote sustainable practices and encourage employees and public to participate in environmental activities,’ said Eng. Alya AbdulRahim Al Harmoudi, director environment department of Dubai Municipality.
‘Under the UNEP theme ‘Raise your Voice Not the Sea Level’, the civic body aims to educate the young generation on the importance of environment protection through different activities and competitions,’ Al Harmoudi said.
World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years it has grown to be a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by stakeholders in over 100 countries. It also serves as the ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet.
‘The focus this year is to create a greater understanding of the growing risks and vulnerability to natural and environmental disasters due to climate change which has resulted in an increase in sea-level that can cause flooding and coastal erosion. We all have a duty to protect and nurture the environment and it is important to adopt eco practices from a very young age. Through our eco-kiosk we intend to reach out to young minds and inspire them to work towards a better, safer future,’ she said.
The activities include environmental film show in DM’s main building from 9.00 am to 1.30 pm, awareness programmes for students in Hor Al Anz office from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm which includes two workshops by civic body officials, public programme in Arabian Center on Wednesday 11 June 2014 from 4.00 pm to 9.00 pm, in addition to presentations and exhibitions by different departments on their environmental activities and achievements.
DM also collaborates with government organizations and schools to provide them with awareness programmes and lectures in various locations in the emirate of Dubai.
