Organised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC), the Dubai Club for the Disabled will host the first edition of the Fazza International Boccia Competition at the Dubai Club for the Disabled in Al Qusais from 24-27 May.
Boccia is a highly specialised competitive sport for people with cerebral palsy or related neurological conditions and is practiced in more than 50 countries today.
The Fazza Boccia competition will add to Dubai’s repute as a regional centre for hosting international sporting events since this is the first time that the tournament is being held in the UAE and the Middle East with eight competing countries including Thailand, Portugal, Malaysia, Tunisia, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE.
Says Majid Abdullah Al Usaimi, Championship Director: “We are proud that the UAE is hosting this Championship for the very first time. It reiterates the continuous development that all Fazza Championships for the Disabled have witnessed this season under the guidance of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. This new championship is an extension of existing Fazza Championships and we expect next year’s competition to be an even bigger tournament.”
Souad Darwish, Director of Championships added: “We are very proud to have another Championship added to the HHC portfolio and cover a new area of sports for the disabled. Contestants will have the opportunity to compete alongside sportsmen and women from across eight countries and we would like to welcome all participating teams to Dubai.”
The UAE team is bracing itself for the competition especially since the best players will have the opportunity to represent their country at the Paralympic games in Incheon later this year.
Says UAE contestant Raissa Al Falassi: “Boccia is a sport that is a mix of bowling and billiards and demands concentration and strong motor skills. I have participated in local Boccia tournaments, but this is my first international level competition. I look forward to performing to my best ability and doing my country proud.”
