Hundreds of families have joined Qatar’s premier community event, the annual Wheels ‘n’ Heels Family Fun Day, to promote the health benefits of regular exercise and a balanced diet. Celebrities, entertainers and sports stars joined families in tackling a three kilometre circuit in the Musuem of Islamic Art Park on Doha’s Corniche, in aid of Reach Out to Asia (ROTA).
In partnership with Flagship Sponsor Maersk Oil Qatar, Wheels ‘n’ Heels 2014 made a special effort to promote Action on Diabetes which is designed to deliver the Qatari leadership’s vision of a healthier and prosperous Qatar by 2030.
For the second consecutive year the Wheels ‘n’ Heels event included an Action on Diabetes village, to raise awareness about the prevention and management of diabetes and the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices. The village offered screening and consultation with nurses and dieticians, exercise demonstrations and healthy snacks prepared by celebrity chef.
The Action on Diabetes village attracted thousands of people during Wheels ‘n’ Heels, and was supported by partnership groups including the Supreme Council of Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care Corporation, Qatar Diabetes Association, Maersk Oil Qatar and world leader in diabetes care Novo Nordisk.
Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad Al-Thani Maersk Oil Qatar’s Deputy Managing Director, said: We proudly sponsored Wheels ‘n’ Heels for a second year. I congratulate the organisers for another successful event. Maersk Oil Qatar has become specialists in operating one of the world’s most complex offshore oil fields at Al Shaheen. But we also seek to make a meaningful contribution to wider society through programmes like Action on Diabetes that seeks to address one of Qatar’s most pressing challenges. It was pleasing to see so many people visit the Action on Diabetes village in the MIA park to get tested and learn more about the causes and appropriate management of the diabetes.
The Wheels ‘n’ Heels entertainment included a performance by singer Shama Hamdan (UAE), while young ones enjoyed meeting popular Baraem Children’s Channel presenters Ahmed Al Mulla and Jihan Arsanious, who MCed the event. Additional star-studded appearances included local and international celebrities and sports icons, Mahmoud and Abdullah Bo Shri (Kuwait), rally racer Nada Zeidan (Qatar), and teenage swimming sensation Nada Mohamed Arakji (Qatar).
