Oily Cart, the UK’s leading theatre company for special needs, moved into the Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs in a residency between 2–6 March. Part of Abu Dhabi Festival 2014′s Education programme, the residency featured workshops, teacher development and specialist performances for children with profound and multiple learning disabilities.
Challenging accepted definitions of theatre and audience, Oily Cart creates innovative, multi-sensory and highly interactive productions by transforming everyday environments into colourful, tactile wonderlands.
By inviting audiences to join them in a world of imagination through the use of projection, puppetry and a vast array of multi-sensory techniques, Oily Cart creates original and highly specialist theatre for young audiences to enjoy.
Oily Cart’s first UAE residency was presented in partnership with Waha Capital, Abu Dhabi Festival 2014 Community and Education partner.
Commenting on Waha Capital’s support of this initiative, Salem Al Noaimi, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Waha Capital, said: “We are very proud to be a part of such an inspiring initiative by the renowned Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation. I believe that collaboration with internationally recognised companies such as Oily Cart allows disabled children in the UAE to fully participate in the nation’s cultural development. Waha Capital believes it is integral for the community that companies contribute socially as well as economically.”
Beyond the performances, Oily Cart’s skills and techniques were shared with teachers at Zayed Higher Organisation to help them interact with children in fun and engaging ways for many years to come.
