Fresh from their recent win of the prestigious award of Excellence from the GCC Secretariat-General for their contributions to the development of youth through sport, Omantel announced that it will renew their sponsorship of Oman Sail’s Youth Programme as title sponsor of the programme.
The Oman Sail youth programme, which will now be named the Omantel Youth Programme, is co-sponsored by Oman Shipping Company, and has become a blueprint for youth sport across the region. It has driven some inspirational performances among Oman’s youth over the past few years including a range of team and individual gold medals in GCC Championship events.
Oman Sail has four sailing schools in Oman at Marina Bandar Rowdha, Mussanah, Sur and The Wave, Muscat. More than 16,500 children have been introduced to sailing through its programmes, which have been designed to nurture the talents of the youth and create opportunities to grow through a strict selection process.
In addition to reducing health risks through the physical aspect of the sport, sailing also builds character and positive personality attributes such as confidence, problem solving, self-discipline, leadership, patience and teamwork.
The benefits and rewards of the investment in the future of these young sailors are starting to show. The youth team participated in the GCC Championships in Qatar recently and brought home the top award for team racing, after winning podium places in most fleets at the event.
They also came first in the Optimist class at the Al Barah International Regatta in Bahrain then four members of the current National Youth Squad, aged between 12 and 14, become the first ever Omanis to compete at the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA) Asian Championships, also in Bahrain.
