To demonstrate its commitment to a more sustainable world, the Radisson Blu Hotel, Muscat observed Earth Hour between 20:30 and 21:30 today. During this time, a host of energy conservation measures were taken in support of the international Earth Hour movement. The activity is in line with the Hotel’s global philosophy of ‘Responsible Business’, one of whose pillars is ‘minimizing environmental impact’.

As part of the Earth Hour initiative, the Hotel put notices in all guests’ rooms, requesting them to turn off lights and conserve energy. Between 20:30 and 21:30, the Hotel’s main lights were turned off, and only minimal lighting was used in public areas. Guests were invited downstairs to the lobby, where refreshments were served. But that wasn’t the whole surprise – guests heading to the restaurant were intrigued to find candle-lit dinners awaiting them. The reason was that the power at the restaurant too was switched off for the whole evening. However, the impeccable preparation that went into organising the event, not to mention the brilliantly-lit display of candles spelling out ‘Earth Hour’ in the lobby, impressed the guests no end.

While the exercise sent out a strong message about the Radisson Blu’s commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen, its purpose went well beyond symbolism. The Hotel estimates that it saved approximately 500KWH of electricity through the Earth Hour initiative. Given that electricity costs account for a significant part of a Hotel’s day-to-day operational costs, the tangible benefits of initiatives like these are clearly evident.

Marius Wolmarans, General Manager, Radisson Blu Hotel, Muscat said, “Responsible Business is more than a Corporate Social Responsibility goal for the Hotel; it is a way of life. The Radisson Blu Hotel, Muscat undertakes a number of ‘Responsible Business’ initiatives throughout the year. Marking Earth Hour was another way for us to demonstrate our pledge to continue being a good corporate citizen. Energy conservation may be the need of the hour, but our experience shows that it also makes sound business sense. I thank our team for organising the Earth Hour initiative, and to our guests for supporting us all the way.”
