The Regulation and Supervision Bureau (the Bureau) in conjunction with Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) and Al Ain Distribution Company (AADC) is rolling out a summer campaign designed to raise awareness of the need to conserve water and electricity to support the sustainable growth of Abu Dhabi for future generations. The campaign will run throughout the summer and will look at creating a better understanding of Abu Dhabi’s first class water and electricity sector. It will also look at the steps Abu Dhabi is taking in sustainable practices and provide tips and information on how to reduce consumption. This campaign will be delivered through a variety of media channels to reach all audiences.
Nicholas Carter, Director General, the Bureau, said: “Our campaign is designed to drive understanding of the true value of water and electricity whilst underlining the importance of making changes to every bodies consumption habits now. Abu Dhabi’s population has grown considerably over the past decade and is likely to continue which directly impacts the demand on resources. So the wise use of electricity and water is an important step towards a sustainable Abu Dhabi.”
The summer months are considered a ‘peak’ period for water and energy consumption as residents cope with increasing temperatures but research shows a few small changes can make a big difference.
Rashed Al Rashedi, Deputy Director General, the Bureau, explains: “Turning down the thermostat on air conditioning units by one degree, selecting the Eco setting on the washing machine or simply switching off lights when leaving a room are all simple things that, done collectively, can have a major long-term effect. We are working closely with our partners ADDC and AADC to encourage everyone to play their part. By working together we can raise awareness on a greater scale and effect change quicker.”
As independent regulator, the Bureau plays a vital role in ensuring the continuous and reliable delivery of water, wastewater and electricity services in Abu Dhabi and protecting customers’ interests. In 2012, the Bureau, in conjunction with ADDC, AADC and ADWEA, introduced new-look water and electricity bills that help residents easily understand their level of consumption.
Designed to provide at-a-glance information on whether consumption is within ‘ideal average’ and therefore ‘in the green’ band or above ‘ideal average’ and ‘in the red’ band, the bills have received positive feedback and been deemed a success.
Al Rashedi concluded: “I urge everyone to take a few minutes to look at their bills and understand their consumption. Then choose a saving tip or tips to try at home. It really is as simple as that. For the sake of future generations it is vital that we change our habits now.”
