Under the patronage of and in the presence of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the fourth edition of the Sharjah Light Festival kicks off this evening (February 6) at a spectacular ceremony at the new Sharjah Municipality building. Hosted by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, the 9-night light festival will run from February 6 – 14 at 12 locations across the Emirate of Sharjah.
The SCTDA unveiled the details of the Sharjah Light Festival 2014 at a press conference last week at the Al Majaz Waterfront. Being celebrated under the theme of Sharjah the Capital of Islamic Culture 2014, the Sharjah Light Festival will use the magic of lighting and latest technology to narrate the story of Sharjah’s Islamic heritage, history and magnificent architecture.
One of the most popular festivals and cultural events in the Emirate’s cultural calendar, Sharjah Light Festival puts the Islamic architectural brilliance of its celebrated monuments, landmarks and cultural heritage once again in the spotlight and reaffirms its status as a global tourist destination with distinct Arab and Islamic cultural and artistic heritage.
The Sharjah Light Festival was first hosted by the SCTDA four years ago and it has been hugely successful and popular, attracting more than 200,000 spectators and extensive coverage in regional and international media.
The festival locations this year include Sharjah Municipality, Kuwait Square, Cultural Palace Square, King Faisal Mosque, Al Majaz Mosque, Al Majaz Waterfront, Central Souk, Al Qasba (internal façades), Dr Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies, Hamza Bin Abdul Mottaleb Mosque in Kalba, and Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque in Khorfakkan. The shows will be held every night from 7pm to 11pm on weekdays and until midnight on weekends.
As in the past, the Authority has tied up with international artists from the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, Switzerland and Cambodia who are all set to paint Sharjah in a completely different new light, highlighting its spiritual heritage and identity. An interface of art, technology, history and culture will create a symphony of civilisation attracting a large number of visitors.
This year, as part of their efforts to promote Sharjah’s tourism industry in international markets, the SCTDA has also invited a group of representatives of tourism companies from around the world, including the UK, Germany and Russia, as well as a group of Arab and international journalists to come and be part of the fascinating experience.
