STOMO staff recently rolled up their sleeves and set out to clean a 1 km stretch of sandy beach outside the Barka II Power and Desalination Plant & Barka III Power Plant. Joined by the senior leadership team, over 70 staff from both plants braved the heat for the ‘Big Beach Clean Up’ and spent three hours in the morning picking up litter from the beach, in order to make the area cleaner for everyone to enjoy.
Over 38 cubic meters of rubbish was collected over the course of 3 hours, with the majority of the litter being comprised of discarded food containers and drink cans, broken glass pieces and fishing equipment.
The company Suez – Tractebel Operation and Maintenance Oman (STOMO) manages the operations and maintenance at both Barka II & III plants, and with an Omanisation rate close to 60% is involved within the local Barka community. The ‘Big Beach Clean Up’ took place as part of the larger STOMO social program, which demonstrates a commitment towards Corporate Social Responsibility, with the aim to use its own assets and human resources to benefit the local environment and the community at large. Further initiatives in STOMO’s CSR plan will be announced later in 2014.
Mike Maudsley the new General Manager for STOMO who was on his first week with the Company said, “Today was a great day for me to be with my team and see the true spirit that STOMO has. They all worked extremely hard but I can also see that they enjoyed carrying a worthy task and delivering something back to the community.”
Commenting on the beach clean-up at Barka, Matt York, STOMO Site Manager of Barka II Power and Desalination Plant and Barka III Power Plant noted, “The Big Beach Clean-up was a great way for our STOMO colleagues to volunteer, help their local community and protect the Sultanate’s precious marine life. It was great fun, and a healthy outdoor activity which is rewarding in more ways than one. Together, Beach cleaners are helping to preserve the marine environment, and also that of the local community of Barka.”
He added, “At STOMO we firmly believe that beyond training, and providing an excellent working environment for our own staff, we also need to play a role in using our own resources to help the local community. The beach clean is just the start of a plan that will be rolled out on behalf of all our assets in Oman and we hope to make a significant contribution.”
Everyone attending the Big Beach clean-up was presented with a T-Shirt and cap made especially for the event. A refreshment tent was on hand to keep all the volunteers hydrated with cold water and soft drinks.
S.M.Karimuddin – HSE Engineer at B2 Power & Desalination Plant, said, “It was great to see so many of the staff got out onto the beach to collect the rubbish. It was a real surprise how many bags we managed to fill, the litter really comprised of water bottles, fishing equipment and other rubbish. We’re pleased to be a part of something that benefits the local community and look forward to taking part in some more community based events throughout the year.”
