The Higher Organizing Committee of the Fifth International Date Palm Conference stated that it confirmed 446 participations from 39 countries from all over the world. 163 of which are speakers presenting papers and 46 scientific poster displayers.
Conference statistics mention that Arab participation reached to 354 participants representing 18 Arab countries, whereas international participation reaches to 92, representing 21 foreign countries.
This fact emphasizes the importance of this scientific event and the results to be recommended which will be of great influence on the development of date palm cultivation and date production at the level of the UAE, the region and the world.
The above was stated in a speech delivered by Honorable Dr. Ali Noaimi, Vice –Chancellor of the UAEU during the press conference held last Sunday morning in the Emirates Palace to announce the details and activities of the Fifth International Date Palm Conference to be held during the period between 16-18 of current March in the Emirates Palace under the kind patronage of HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan , President of the UAE (God protect him) and the presence of H.H. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan Minister of Culture, Youth & Community Development, and HH Sheikh Hamdan Mabarak Al Nahyan Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research, Chancellor of UAEU.
The Vice – Chancellor added that this Conference is only one ring in a chain extended and connected with the initiatives launched by UAEU during two decades for the sake of promoting the cultivation and industry of palm tree starting from constructing Plant Tissues Culture Lab to establishing international network of date palm and Khalifa Center For biotechnologies and genetic engineering, Khalifa International Date Palm Award, Palm Tree Friends Society which takes the university its main office, in addition to organizing conferences, forums, workshops at the top of which is the series of International Date Palm Conferences.
He stressed the interest of HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE, may God protect him, to promote the efforts and initiatives aiming to increase date production so as to achieve the best practices and the utmost possible benefit from the industry of date palm. This Conference comes as a step forward on that path and it is the fifth within a series which started in 1998 when the first Conference was held then followed by the second Conference in 2011, the third in 2006, and the fourth in 2010, and by now we are ready to receive the fifth Conference to be held on Sunday the 16th of March 2014 at Emirates Palace Hotel and last to the 18th of March 2014.
Date palm has its historic, economic and social importance in the history of the UAE, and the UAE interest in date palm is limitless. However, the country production of date witnessed recently a great leap due to its historic position and to the generous support of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of the UAE (May God rest his soul) in addition to the interest of HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE, may God protect him and his brothers their Highness Members of the Supreme Council of the Union, Rulers of the Emirates and his loyal Crown-prince.
Dr. Ali Al Naomi concluded his speech during the press conference by expressing his appreciation and esteem to First Lit. H.H. Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan , Abu Dhabi Crown –Prince, Deputy Commander of the Armed Forces, to HH. Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Presidential Affairs for their generous and limitless support to the agricultural sector in general and the blessed tree in particular. However, proudly the Conference constitutes an extra scientific achievement attained by the University. It is hoped that its researches .papers and recommendations will result in value additions that enrich knowledge and then technologies pertaining to the cultivation, manufacturing and trade of date palm in this speedy age known for its quick advance and interrelation between sciences.
