Nearly 1500 children from UAE schools were invited to flex their creative muscles during the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival through competitions organized by The Media Group (TMG).

On April 16, 1000 students from all emirates took part in the Periwinkle colouring competition. Colouring, according to TMG promotes fine and gross motor skills. “All entries will be judged by art teachers from different schools,” Sunil Kumar, TMG’s COO said.

Following the colouring competition and on April 17, 500 students took part in the Pen Nosy creative writing competition. The children were divided into two groups – the Buds (aged 8 to 10 years) and the Blossoms (aged 11 to 14 years). Before the competition, UAE-based journalist Manjula Ramakrishnan, who will be heading the judging panel, spoke to the budding writers about what creative writing means and gave them some tips. Ramakrishnan has written more than 3000 articles and her work has been published in the Time of Oman, the Gulf News and Panorama magazine.

This is the first time that both competitions were held during the SCRF. “In the past, the competitions were only held at schools. We wanted to do something positive to society. We already publish children’s publications but we also wanted to give the opportunity for the young ones to be creative and to express themselves,” said Kumar.

All participants will receive certificates stamped by the SCRF and the best writing pieces will be published in Youngest, one of TMG’s children’s publications. An awards ceremony will be held at the SCRF on April 24th to announce the winners.

TMG Children are publishers of MeKids and Youngest, English children’s monthly publications that are read by over 100,000 families of 62 nationalities all over GCC.
