Bahrain Polytechnic, in partnership with Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) and Central Informatics Organization (CIO) hosted the launch of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) research on May 5th 2014 at Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa, under the patronage of the Minister of Transport and Acting CEO of Bahrain EDB, H.E Kamal bin Ahmed Mohamed.
Entrepreneurship plays an important role in the Kingdom, as stated in Bahrain’s 2030 Economic Vision; a phased development plan to improve life in Bahrain. Undoubtedly, knowing the numbers behind such a role is critical in attracting innovation-driven investors into Bahrain.
Hence, the launch of the internationally known GEM research (a research which measures the amount of entrepreneurial activity of individuals across a wide range of countries) will shed light on the statistics and benefits provided by many public and private sector entrepreneurship support entities, according to Dr. Mohamed Al Aseeri, Acting CEO of Bahrain Polytechnic.
“The study focuses on perceptions, intentions and attitudes of individuals towards entrepreneurship. The information collected will help identify barriers to entrepreneurship that are perceived by the public, and in return, for example, could help these support entities respond by giving more awareness or training.” said the Acting CEO.
The GEM research will be conducted annually by the Bahrain GEM National Team, closely monitoring entrepreneurial activity. This allows Bahrain to find out how it’s progressing compared with other countries.
The idea of entrepreneurship is a topic which is highly focused at Bahrain Polytechnic, and Dr. Al Aseeri insists the younger generation of the Kingdom should make use of the opportunity of starting their own business.
“Over here [at the Polytechnic], we offer more practical learning to our students than theory, especially when it comes to entrepreneurial studies.
“The GEM research will play a good role in the future, uncovering the statistics for the respective bodies, and hopefully they will make use of the information and encourage this generation to start their own businesses.
“On that note, I’d like to thank H.E Kamal bin Ahmed Mohamed, EDB, CIO and the respective companies who attended the launch. I also want to wish the GEM National Team good luck in their studies.” concluded Dr. Al Aseeri.
