This is the fast growing firm’s first international office.
In addition, HBJ Gateley Wareing is the one of the only UK law firms to be granted a Legal Advocates Licence by the Dubai Ruler’s Court, which allows it to appear before the Dubai Courts with locally qualified lawyers. The firm will trade in Dubai as HBJ Gateley Wareing Legal Consultants – A Branch of HBJ Gateley Wareing UK LLP.
The new office will be led by partner Paul Taylor who joins from the Dubai office of Berrymans. He was previously at Hammonds in the UK and Hong Kong. He joins HBJ Gateley Wareing as a partner and Head of Dubai Construction and specialises in construction disputes, litigation, arbitration, and ADR.
The new office will act for leading national and international development companies, construction and engineering companies, international and local main contractors, subcontractors and professional consultants on construction and engineering projects in the UAE including reclaimed islands, multi and single tower blocks, infrastructure, process power facilities, hotels and resorts, residential and office developments.
Paul is also joined by senior legal advisor Dennis Brand who moved with him from Berrymans in Dubai and is widely regarded as one of the most prominent construction specialists in the Gulf. He specialises in non-contentious and contractual issues in construction and engineering as well as commercial and corporate matters.
In addition, senior assistant Anthony Page has relocated to Dubai from HBJ Gateley Wareing’s Birmingham office. Anthony specialises in contentious construction and will advise the firm’s clients on all aspects of construction related disputes.
The initial goal of the office will be to develop a full service construction capability. The Legal Advocates Licence gives the firm the unique ability to act directly on contentious issues, and effectively offer an integrated “one stop shop” to construction clients across the UAE and the Middle East.
Commenting on his appointment Paul Taylor said: “I am absolutely delighted to have joined HBJ Gateley Wareing as the firm develops its first international offering. We expect to rapidly build a high profile construction practice in Dubai and the future strategy will be to use that visibility as a platform to extend into the firm’s other core areas including shipping and transport, corporate and commercial property. We expect the office to grow to approximately 20 staff by the end of 2008.”
HBJ Gateley Wareing joint senior partner Michael Ward, added: “The decision to open in Dubai was compelling for us. We have one of the UK’s leading construction practices and with our significant shipping and transport, finance and corporate expertise we saw the new office as an ideal opportunity to develop a high quality niche offering in one of the world’s fastest growing emerging markets. In addition to the local market, many of our UK clients have interests in the UAE and our strong platform in Dubai, as well as our local advocacy capability, will allow us to effectively service their needs in the region.”
