    UAE seen to spend $40bn on ICT by 2015: study

    Kuwait Financial Centre (Markaz) has said the UAE is the second largest ICT market in the GCC region after Saudi Arabia in terms of capital and volume of spending, Arab News has reported. Between 2003 and 2010, the UAE’s ICT spending has grown at a CAGR of almost 19% to $12bn, with ICT spending for the period 2013-2015 expected to reach some $40bn, Markaz said in the report.

    Apple’s XProtect blocks new OS X Trojan

    Apple Inc. has said its XProtect anti-malware scanner has blocked the ability to run a new malware package for its OS X, which security firm Intego said it’s another targeted command-and-control Trojan horse, with apparent associations with the Syrian Electronic Army, Cnet has reported. Once installed, the running Trojan will, among standard command-and-control activity like grabbing personal information, attempt to download an image associating the nefarious activity with the Syrian Electronic Army.

    Mobile apps driving smartphone, tablet ecosystem: Gartner

    Global market research firm, Gartner has said mobile apps continue to be a major driver of the smartphone and tablet ecosystem, with the total number of mobile app downloads, both free and paid, to soar to 102 billion by the end of this year, up from 64 billion in 2012, Tech Hive has reported. By 2017, the number of app downloads should reach nearly 269 billion, Gartner said. This upward trend for app downloads will continue through 2017, the firm said, with the strongest growth through 2014, when nearly 139 billion downloads are projected.

    Microsoft may launch Office for iPad, Android tablets

    Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has hinted the software giant is working on a version of Office for the iPad and for Android tablets, while addressing Wall Street analysts on Thursday, PC World has reported. “We don’t have our heads in the sand,” he said, adding that Microsoft is “working on everything that you think we should be working on.” Windows is the preferred platform for Microsoft applications and remains supremely important, but executives keep their “eyes wide open” with regards to the opportunities for generating additional revenue by porting products like Office to other platforms, he said.

    Google’s Quickoffice is now free to iOS, Android users

    Google has said it has made Quickoffice available for free for iOS and Android users, and reveals plans to bundle in 10GB of free storage for Google Drive for anyone who logs into their Google account from the app by September 26, Tech Hive has reported. Quickoffice, which enables users to create and edit documents, including proprietary Microsoft Office files, integrates with Google Drive so that users may access their files and folders from almost any platform.

    Microsoft releases zero-day fix for IE vulnerability

    Microsoft has released a temporary patch to fix a “zero-day” vulnerability in its Internet Explorer (IE) web browser, BBC has reported. Attackers could set up websites specifically designed to exploit the vulnerability, and then run malicious code on users’ computers, Microsoft said. The bug, which relates to the browser’s memory, could affect all versions of IE6 to 10.

    Mozilla delays Windows 8 ‘Metro’ Firefox launch

    Mozilla has announced that slower-than-expected progress on Firefox for Microsoft’s Windows 8 “Modern” user interface means that the touch-based browser likely won’t launch until late January, PC World has reported. The Firefox “Preview Release” will still be packaged with the Aurora build of Firefox 26 for the Windows desktop when it launches Tuesday, as originally planned. Mozilla maintains three public build channels simultaneously: Aurora is the least polished and a precursor to Beta, which in turn leads to Release.

    Microsoft donates licences, software to Jordanian cancer foundation

    Jordan’s King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) has said it has received from Microsoft a $202,370 donation as licences and software, Jordan Times has reported. The donation “will help enhance and upgrade the foundation’s IT infrastructure”, said the KHCF. “All this will help us better serve our patients at the King Hussein Cancer Centre,” Princess Dina Mired, director general of the KHCF, said.

    Oman to launch ICT-linked SME database programme

    Oman’s Information Technology Authority (ITA) has announced the launch of a business development initiative designed to create a database of ICT-related SMEs in the country, Muscat Daily has reported. The ICT SME Development Programme further supports ICT-related SMEs through its interactions with such companies in the direct line of business. “Having a ready database of ICT-related SMEs will definitely secure the wider interest of the larger IT companies to start considering and utilising ICT-related SME services in the categories of software, hardware, security and network,” said the ITA.

    Microsoft launches iPad-for-Surface trade-in programme

    Microsoft has rolled out a promotion that includes giving credit worth a minimum $200 to customers who turn in “gently used” Apple Inc.’s iPads to its stores, Bloomberg has reported. The promotion is available for the iPad 2, 3 and 4 models, Microsoft said. The company sold $853m of Surface tablets in the fiscal year ended June 30, and took a $900m writedown of inventory related to the product.
