    Microsoft investors pushing for Gates to step down as chairman

    Investors in Microsoft Corp are lobbying the board to press for Bill Gates to step down as chairman of the software company he co-founded 38 years ago, Reuters has reported, citing people familiar with matter. Three of the top 20 investors are concerned that Gates’ role as chairman effectively blocks the adoption of new strategies and would limit the power of a new chief executive to make substantial changes. Gates owns about 4.5% of the $277bn company and is its largest individual shareholder. A representative for Microsoft declined to comment.

    Global brand consultancy, Interbrand has said Apple Inc. has emerged as the most valuable brand in the world, passing Coca-Cola which held the top position for 13 years, PC World has reported. The maker of high-profile products like the iPad and iPhone, which was ranked second last year, saw its brand value grow 28% this year to $98.3bn. Other tech companies that figured in the top five rankings for 2013 were Google at number two and IBM and Microsoft at fourth and fifth place, respectively. Google was number four in 2012, while IBM was third and Microsoft held the fifth position last year.

    Dell withdraws only Windows RT tablet from online store

    Dell Inc. has stopped selling its XPS 10 Windows RT tablet through its website and the now-private company is recommending the Windows 8-running Latitude 10 instead, PC World has reported. Dell has not confirmed whether this is the end of its Windows RT range, or if it’s simply making way for a successor to the XPS 10. “We’re going to be announcing our full tablet portfolio at the event in New York next week [October 2, 2013] and will be providing full details then,” the company said.
