The late Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani: His ruling years

His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, former Emir of Qatar, passed away on Sunday evening, at the age of 84.

The current Emir of the nation, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the grandson of the late ruler, has announced three days of national morning for the sad occasion.

Sheikh Hamad served as the Emir of the GCC nation from 1972 till 1995.

Before taking the crown, Sheikh Khalifa started his ascent up the power ladder in the 1950s, when he was appointed as Qatar’s Minister of Education. He also served as Deputy Emir and was named the heir to the crown and, throughout the 1960s, he also served as Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, in addition to overseeing the operations of other government entities and departments across the country.
