Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum: The legacy
The emirate of Dubai announced a three-day mourning period on Saturday (September 19), after His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, passed away from a heart attack.
Sheikh Rashid was the eldest son of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The late Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed was known for being an active sportsman and a philanthropist.
He has participated in several equestrian endurance competitions and scored several wins for his country. Moreover, he especially valued horses and horse racing – he reportedly owned several racehorses, including the Zabeel Stables in Dubai, and won prestigious races.
His love for sports and philanthropy materialised in the official work he did within Dubai. He headed a number of sporting bodies within the emirate and played an active role within Dubai Cares, the emirate’s leading philanthropist organisation.
His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, Commander of the Union Defence Force and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, expressed his heartfelt condolences to Sheikh Mohammed on the great loss.
Rulers of other emirates also expressed deep sorrow over the passing away of Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed; Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, also mourned the death of Sheikh Rashid and expressed condolences to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid and the Al Maktoum family.
“We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return,” Dubai’s Ruler said, according to the UAE’s official news agency, WAM.
Funeral prayers were performed at Zabeel Mosque on Saturday and Sheikh Rashid was buried at Umm Hurair cemetery at Al Fahidi, Bur Dubai.
