Under the royal patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Women Establishment, wife of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Presidential Affairs, UAE; and in line with her ongoing commitment to hone and nurture Dubai’s arts and culture scene, Sheikha Fatma, Sheikh Mohammed & Sheikh Hamdan bin Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan inaugurated Ladies Day at Art Dubai 2014 on Wednesday, 19 March, 2014.
The fair inauguration was also attended by Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Director General of the Dubai Government’s Media Office, Shamsa Saleh, CEO of Dubai Women Establishment, Mona Bin Kalli, Director of The Cultural Office, and Lamia Abdulaziz Khan, Director of Dubai Ladies Club; as well as a number of prominent female artists, gallerists and distinguished ladies from the UAE community.
Sheikha Manal, said, “Founded in the steadfast belief that the arts add value to a community that can be measured both economically and sentimentally, our wise leadership have continuously supported the establishment of worthy and notable art initiatives that will ensure the visual arts’ importance in the fabric of life in the UAE. Since its inception eight years ago, Art Dubai has unquestionably forged its place as a leading event in the global Arts scene and is a testament to Dubai’s standing as a global hub for culture and creativity. I congratulate Art Dubai for delivering another unparalleled quality art event that allows our local arts community to develop and the general public appreciate our rich culture.”
Art Dubai is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE. Today, Art Dubai is the leading international art fair in the MENASA (Middle East/North Africa/South Asia), has become a cornerstone of the region’s booming contemporary art community.
Their visit began at The Sheikha Manal Little Artist Program, where Sheikha Fatma, Sheikh Mohammed & Sheikh Hamdan bin Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan participated of in the various creative activities conceived by Dylan Martorell – featured artist for the Sheikha Manal Little Artists programme 2014. The workshops (for ages 5-8 and 9-12) had the participants creating sounds from drawings and instruments from upcycled materials. The initiative is held under the patronage and guidance of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
On the occasion, H.H. Sheikha Manal recognized the importance of the arts in fostering a well-balanced education. She said, “The arts are an integral part of every child’s development as it helps young students with creative thinking and problem-solving. We know experiences like these are important not only for ensuring the continued success of our creative industries but also for individuals’ development, and that these experiences remain with them for the rest of their lives. I would like to invite all enjoy the wide selection of activities and projects organised by The Sheikha Manal Little Artist Program, and explore their creative side.”
Moving onwards, in addition to visiting the main galleries exhibition space, they also visited booth of The Cultural Office, which featured details of their new programs including The Sheikha Manal Art Exchange Program, the Al Ydar Urban Arts project and The Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award. The tour continued onwards to the exhibition by winners of The Abraaj Group Art Prize; as well as to Marker, the curated section of invited art spaces and galleries focusing in 2014 on Central Asia and the Caucasus; followed by a viewing of the Cartier exhibition, ‘L’Odyssée de Cartier-Parcours d’un style’, a unique high jewellery collection that also showcases the Cartier’s abundantly rich world of inspiration through a visual journey from perspective of the Maison.
As one of the foremost patrons of art in the UAE, and a keen supporter of young emerging artists, H.H. Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid’s involvement in this ambitious initiative reflects her personal belief in the importance of art and culture in community, and the positive ways which artist-driven initiatives impact their societies. She is also appointed to the Honorary Board of Patrons for Art Dubai. Art Dubai is one of the most anticipated events in the global arts calendar. The ninth edition of this annual event features a stellar line-up of international and regional galleries. The 2014 edition runs from March 19-22.
Alongside the gallery halls, comprising Contemporary, Modern and Marker, the fair’s extensive not-for-profit programme includes site-specific works for Art Dubai Projects, radio and film; an exhibition of works by winners of the annual The Abraaj Group Art Prize; the critically acclaimed Global Art Forum and Campus Art Dubai the free Saturday School for curators, artists and cultural workers living in the UAE.
