Apple has said it is working on a new and more inclusive set of emojis, nearly two years after the last major update, Christian Science Monitor has reported. The new change comes in the wake of a Fast Company post questioning whether emojis are ‘racist,’ and an online petition asking Apple CEO Tim Cook for “more diversity [on] the emoji keyboard” – signed my more than 4,000 people. “Our emoji characters are based on the Unicode standard, which is necessary for them to be displayed properly across many platforms. There needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set, and we have been working closely with the Unicode Consortium in an effort to update the standard,” said a spokesman for Apple.
