OSN marks historic first in Egyptian TV with launch of advanced technology platform
OSN, the region’s leading pay-TV network, has announced a significant investment in the country’s television industry with the launch of its state-of-the-art technology platform that brings several historic firsts to the nation. The launch is supported by Cable Network Egypt (CNE), a long-term partner of OSN in the country.
OSN’s new technology significantly transforms Egypt’s television sector in addition to driving the growth of the country’s creative industry and boosting the economy by creating new jobs for Egyptians.
Addressing the demand for a truly world-class television experience, the newly launched ‘OSN Plus HD’ is the country’s first Internet-enabled satellite receiver and recorder with full 3D and HD capabilities. The customer experience is enhanced further as OSN provides a growing roster of channels in spectacular HD; currently at 46 HD channels, the selection is unmatched in the country.
OSN Plus HD introduces – for the first time in Egypt – the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) that enables viewers to pause and record live television. In another industry-defining first, OSN Plus HD will also feature an extensive ‘Video on Demand’ library providing viewers with instant access to thousands of hours of premium movies, TV series and children’s entertainment at the touch of a button. The launch of the first of its kind ‘On Demand’ functionality means Egyptians can now watch what they want, when they want, transforming the way home entertainment will be consumed.
With much of OSN’s Arabic programming being produced in Egypt, the shift by the company to bring in 3D, HD and On Demand entertainment is expected to catalyse the country’s pay-TV industry, particularly by curbing television piracy and creating new opportunities for the creative sector to produce compelling content that is also tailored for HD viewing.
David Butorac, Chief Executive Officer, OSN, said: “Egypt is set to become one of the largest and fastest growing markets for the television industry. As home to some of the most powerful content, Egyptian television is an inspiration for all. OSN has been a committed partner in supporting the country’s broadcast sector – both by investing in technology and manpower, as well as promoting creative talent. The launch of OSN Plus HD is a strategic and long-term growth initiative of OSN in Egypt, and we thank Cable Network Egypt for their continued support.
“A marquee platform of our network, OSN Plus HD draws on the possibilities of the Internet and is the result of our significant investments in the most advanced technologies. With OSN Plus HD, we are offering the Egyptian community a TV experience that is unmatched. For the first time, they have the option to record live TV, and access their favourite TV shows whenever they want.”
“This key investment by OSN in the country will not only strengthen our presence in Egypt but also encourage Egyptian talent to explore new ways to create compelling television experiences,” explained Butorac. “To support the launch, we are also expanding our retail presence, which in turn will create new job opportunities.”
OSN’s retail footprint comprises 13 touch points in popular malls in Cairo, Alexandria, Mansoura and Hurghada in addition to eight showrooms across the country. OSN also runs an award-winning call centre operation in Egypt where staff is continually trained to better serve its growing number of subscribers. OSN’s Egypt call centre has grown by over 400 per cent since it was launched in 2012 and there are plans to significantly expand operations over the next 12 months.
Dr. Magdy Abbas, General Manager, Cable Network Egypt (CNE), said: “Egypt is at the heart of the Arab world’s entertainment industry with our talented professionals making a mark globally. In the growth of our creative industries, the pay-TV sector has played a significant role. At CNE, we are committed to bringing the best television experiences to the country through partnerships with international leaders who leverage the power of technology.
“OSN has been a longstanding partner of CNE and is at the forefront in addressing viewers’ needs. We are confident that OSN will continue to play an integral role in driving the growth of the pay-TV industry in Egypt, by minimising the adverse impact of piracy and investing in Egyptian content and talent.”
Ibrahim Eissa, the protagonist in OSN’s El Boss, added: “With Egypt’s television industry witnessing epochal growth, it is imperative for providers like OSN to continue to address the nation’s growing demand. The launch of this exciting new technology will set the benchmark for the industry, allowing talent and original content production to flourish.”
OSN Plus HD opens up a whole new world of entertainment where viewers can personalise their entertainment experience. With the entire spectrum of services now available in Egypt, subscribers will have access to options such as Parental Control and language selection. They can also plan their viewing effortlessly with OSN’s advanced Electronic Programming Guide (EPG), which allows them to plan their television viewing seven days in advance.
OSN Plus HD offers easy access to premium content including a wide array of children’s entertainment including exclusive offerings from Disney, the newest movies, live sports action, news and current affairs from around the world, and insights into nature and the animal world, will all now be available at the fingertips of viewers.
OSN promotes and nurtures Egyptian talent and original content creation. Most recently, OSN underlined its investment in Egypt’s television industry with the launch of its own production, El Boss, starring renowned journalist Ibrahim Eissa. The show is set to return with a new season in the third quarter of 2014 following the return of the hugely popular Heba Rigl Al Ghorab starring Emmy Samir Ghanim this month.
