British Council and Sharjah Art Foundation to host British-Pakistani artist’s work in the UAE
The British Council in the UAE andthe Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) will host celebrated British-Pakistani artist Rasheed Araeen’s exhibition at the Sharjah Art Foundation from 13March – 13 May 2014.
Rasheed Araeen: Before and After Minimalism presents sculptures, paintings and drawings created during the more-than 50-year career of this influential Pakistani-born British artist. This first major exhibition of the artist’s work in the MENASA includes early paintings and drawing, documentation of participatory and performance works, seminal sculptures from the 1960’s and a new sculpture specially commissioned for Sharjah titled Sharjah Blues.
A pioneer of minimalist sculpture in Britain, Rasheed’s work is synonymous with geometric structures using vertical and horizontal lines held together by a network of diagonal patterns.
Curated by Sharjah Art Foundation President Sheikha Hoor Al-Qasimi, this exhibition of Rasheed Araeen’s work will be on display at the Sharjah Art Foundation Art Spaces in Al Mureijah, Sharjah.
Marc Jessel, Country Director, British Council UAE, said: “The British Council strives to forge greater exchange of ideas and creative opportunities between artists and organisations from the UK and the UAE and we are thrilled that Rasheed Araeen will be showcasing his work here in the UAE.
“The British Council is keen to host the best British artists in the UAE to connect with the world through culture and this event serves our wider strategy to build international understanding through the arts.”
Sharjah Art Foundation President Sheikha Hoor Al-Qasimi stated, “It is a great honour for the Sharjah Art Foundation to be presenting the work of this important artist whose wide ranging practice as an artist, curator and writer has profoundly influenced the way we think about contemporary art today.”
As a continuous supporter of the arts and culture in the UAE, the British Council also co-hosted today a lunch and networking event to welcome UK-based curators who will be participating as correspondents of the International Curators Forum (ICF) at the Sharjah Art Foundation’s 2014 March Meetings– akey event for the arts industry in the region, running from 13 – 16th March 2014
David Bailey, Director, International Curators Forum, commented: “The ICF is a conceptual network established to provide an agile and adaptive platform for curators and artists to share conversations about their work in the context of an accelerated globalisation of the artworld. Since 2007 ICF has been invited to stage tactical interventions at many of the world’s most prestigious and exciting art events spanning the commercial and public arenas, providing funding and context as well as new frameworks to address the question of the Diaspora. Our curators are selected by submission and a stated agenda to engage with the specific context of our forums. This is the second ICF journey to Sharjah and continues a conversation on the infrastructures and aesthetics of the region and how these inform and develop international curatorial concerns on the specific development of the local within the pervasive ubiquity of the global.”
The ICF is an association that meets to discuss curatorial issues that may arise from key events in the international arts calendar. It offers bursaries and professional development opportunities to curators and works in partnership with key national and international bodies.
