DLA Piper wins Corporate Social Responsibility Award
DLA Piper, the global law firm, has scooped this year’s coveted Corporate Counsel Middle East Award for Corporate Social Responsibility. The awards, now in their third year, were jointly hosted by Legal Week at a ceremony held in Dubai’s Mina Seyahi attended by over 300 lawyers.
The firm was commended for its commitment to CSR in the region, and globally, with its clear strategy that focuses on Pro Bono, New Perimeter, UNICEF, Break into Law, Diversity, the UN Global Compact and the Environment.. A contributing factor in achieving the award for the number of pro bono hours delivered by the firm, amounting to 207,000 hours in 2013, making it the largest legal provider of pro bono services
Other key aspects of the firm’s CR programme include the provision and research of advice to the International Service of Human Rights for the UN Declaration of Human Rights; the provision training to Lebanese lawyers working in association with the Beirut Bar Association; educating law students from the UAE University and the Kuwait International Law School on international law and advocacy skills as well as supporting an orphanage in Riyadh, labour camps in the UAE and fundraising for UNICEF’.

The judges on the night commended the firm: “The winner has an excellent track record on social corporate responsibility initiatives and submitted an extremely impressive entry. The firm focuses on pro bono, community engagement, diversity and environmental sustainability and its CSR initiatives demonstrate clearly how it engages successfully with its staff, clients and communities.”
DLA Piper has set specific goals in the Middle East region in order to help create a balanced workforce with a good mix of local and international employees. Local Arab employees currently account for 36 per cent of the firm’s workforce, with an even split of male and female employees. In Saudi Arabia, the firm is one of the only International law firms to hire female lawyers.
