Dubai digitalizes perennial trees’ data
Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, on Sunday has launched the plantation week activities organized by the Public Parks and Horticulture Department in Zabeel-1 area during which the department started the first stage of numbering perennial trees in the emirate of Dubai.
‘This year civic body decided to start with a unique project which is numbering all types of traditional trees including Ghaf, Qarad, Atal, Sidr, Samar, Lathb and Rola..etc with the aim to collect all data about these trees and keep its complete record digitally. Hence, the public parks department will work hard to provide a code for each tree with an electronic card in which the entire history of the tree incorporated,’ Lootah said.
‘All these trees are very important due to its deep rooted connection with the history and tradition of the country. It has played and has been playing inevitable roles in the human life and conserving the environment. So it is the responsibility of civic body to protect them and create public awareness on its importance’ he said.
Eng. Taleb Abdul Kareem Julfar, director public parks and horticulture department said : through this project we can control the preservation of perennial trees and its monitoring through an innovative system that works with the help of GPS.
‘In the first stage, total 10,000 trees in different areas of the emirate of Dubai will be numbered using GPS system, and all trees will be given a number plate with a code for the future monitoring and follow up through a digitalized system. All the works will be done in coordination with GIS department of Dubai Municipality,’ Julfar said.
‘The department has already completed numbering trees in 23 areas in the emirate which totaled 10,219 trees/plants since 1993,’ he said.
‘The plantation week activities will continue till Thursday in different parks in the emirate of Dubai. The first tree will be planted in Holy Quran Park on Monday at 8.30 am as part of activities in the presence of Dr. Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahad – Minister of Environment and Water,’ he added.
