HMC appoints new Dentistry Chairman
International dental expert Professor Johann de Vries has been appointed as Chairman of the Department of Dentistry at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). Professor de Vries has 30 years of global dentistry experience functioning in clinical, education and senior leadership roles.
“Professor de Vries’ extensive background in dental leadership, education and practice, coupled with a strong dedication to his patients and a solid knowledge of the region, uniquely positions him to lead Hamad’s Department of Dentistry,” said HMC’s Managing Director Hanan Al-Kuwari, PhD. “Professor de Vries’ appointment is also part of our commitment to establishing opportunities for sharing of world-class knowledge among our clinicians in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients.”
Professor de Vries most recently held the position of Dean at the University of Adelaide’s School of Dentistry, Australia. He is a visiting Professor at Kings College London, Professor Emeritus at The University of Adelaide, and is on the Editorial Board of an international research journal. He has also chaired the International Association Dental Research Awards Committee. Professor de Vries is past President of the International Federation of Dental Academics and Associations and is a Director of the Australian Dental Council. He is a Fellow in four international dental colleges and in 2012 he was awarded the distinguished Gies Award in the USA for vision, leadership and innovation. Professor de Vries has played a major role in the establishment of new dental facilities, and their accreditation, in the Middle East.
Professor de Vries said he is honoured to be the Chairman of the Dentistry Department, adding that he is excited about building on the excellent work undertaken by the Department thus far in order to provide the people of Qatar with the best possible speciality dental care.
“Excellent specialty care services are already being provided to the people of Qatar at HMC’s Dentistry Department and I will build on this tradition,” said Professor de Vries. There are a number of pressing needs that require attention, including the promotion of oral health to address the high prevalence of dental disease, especially in children.”
HMC’s Department of Dentistry provides specialist treatment such as orthodontics, periodontics, pedodontics and endodontics and is based in Rumailah Hospital and the OPD Annex. Last year HMC introduced a new fixed time appointment system for the specialist dental services in order to ensure the most urgent cases are seen first and to reduce waiting times in clinics.
