The ICT Fund showcases its leading experience in supporting R&D projects during a field visit to the UAE University in Al Ain
The ICT Fund, an initiative by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), has showcased its experience in fostering and supporting research and development projects and funding UAE students’ ICT-related ideas of projects, during a field visit to the UAE University in Al Ain. The visit came in response to an invitation received from the University for ICT Fund to discuss funding initiatives and programs for faculty researchers and students.
The meeting was attended by H.E. Eng. Omar Mohammed Al Mahmoud, Acting CEO of ICT Fund accompanied by Mansoor M. Al Kaitoob, Senior R&D Projects Coordinator at ICT Fund. And from the University, Prof. Dr. Reyadh Al Mehaideb, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research & Graduate Studies along with a number of academics and students.
During the open meeting, the attendants discussed the advantage of the various ICT Fund initiatives for the researchers and students at the UAE University, and both parties can strengthen the cooperation level between them, especially in the field of research and development projects. They also highlighted the terms and conditions required in any research project submitted by any researcher or student in accordance with ICT Fund’s objectives, which entails providing a national project that supports the UAE vision of boosting knowledge-based economy and the telecom sector. ICT Fund and UAE University agreed on that the Emirati student would be the keystone in making any funding support and academic sponsorship. They focused on empowering a new Emirati generation to be well qualified and armed with technology knowledge, research and development skills which have become vital in supporting social and economic strategies of in countries.
H.E. Dr. Ali Rashid Al Noaimi, UAE University Vice Chancellor and Prof. Mohamed Al Baili, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs received the ICT Fund delegation, where they exchanged each one expertise and how much they can move forward in their strategic partnership to cover the various aspects in ICT Industry.
The UAE University has joined the ICT Fund’s “Betha” Scholarship Program earlier this year, which resulted in granting academic scholarships along with monthly allowances for Emirati students who applied for B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels at the university, in order to encourage them pursuing their studies in majors related to ICT field. Through its partnership with the UAE University, the ICT Fund provided 30 scholarships to Emirati students who want to get related master’s degrees in the UAE University with a monthly allowance of AED 10,000. Additionally, ICT Fund dedicated 50 seats for B.Sc. degree students in Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Information Technology with a monthly allowance of AED 5,000. Moreover, there were a number of research projects and initiatives submitted by university’s researchers and are now in the process of discussion and evaluation by ICT Fund.

Therefore, we are confident that our joint workshop will expand the cooperation opportunities between us, where we can contribute more to enhancing national competencies and fostering talents that can lead the emerging technology sector in the UAE and the region during the next few years,” commented H.E. Eng. Omar Mohammed Al Mahmoud, Acting CEO of ICT Fund.
Prof. Dr. Reyadh Al Mehaideb, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research & Graduate Studies expressed the importance of having this collaboration between the UAE University and ICT Fund, to unify their powers towards building a generation of distinguished Emirati youth armed with technology knowledge and research & development skills. “The University spares no effort to provide all the necessary funding requirements needed to adopt distinguished students’ projects in the field of research & development. In its commitment to supporting UAE talents and building competencies in the field of research & development along with developing the UAE ICT sector, the University again is looking for local partnerships that serve its vision in graduating best Emirati academics, researchers and specialists who respond to the nation’s increasing demand for talents”, he said.
