Knowledge without Borders promotes culture of reading among patients in four hospitals in UAE
Knowledge without Borders (KWB) has introduced ‘book trolleys’ in government hospitals across the UAE, to encourage patients and their escorts to read.
The new initiative comes as part of KWB’s efforts to promote reading within the local community and encourage patients to make use of their convalescence to developing their knowledge and invest their time in useful activates.
Patients and visitors to Al Qasimi Hospital have widely welcomed the initiative which has seen KWB put two book trolleys, one for children, and the other for adults, in two important locations in the hospital.
The initiative will be implemented in three other hospitals in the country, including Latifa Hospital in Dubai, Khalifa Hospital in Ajman, and Khorfakkan Hospital in Sharjah.
Speaking about the new initiative, Rashid Mohammad Al Kous, General Manager of Knowledge without Borders, said, “We seek through this initiative to realise the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and to implement the directives of Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Head of the KWB Organizing Committee, to bring books closer to readers and promote a culture of reading in the community amongst all ages, by making books accessible to people, especially in places close to them.”
Al Kous indicated that the books cover various topics and appropriate for people of all ages. Each trolley contains 50 books in Arabic, because the project focuses on promoting reading in Arabic, adding that the four hospitals that have been selected for the first phase are considered to be among the largest hospitals in the UAE.
The book trolleys will be moving around hospital corridors to distribute books to patients during waiting times for doctors as well as to patients admitted to these hospitals. KWB is keen to offer books that deal with light and amusing topics, from the lists of bestsellers and new releases, plus books written by prominent authors.
The Knowledge without Borders project was launched under the initiative of HH Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and with the close follow up of Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Head of the Organising Committee of Knowledge without Borders project.
The initiative aims to spread community awareness about the importance of reading and general knowledge, and to establish a library in each Emirati house, containing a valuable collection of books that cover various areas of knowledge after studying the cultural needs of each family.
