Mafraq and Al Rahba Hospitals open new maternity assessment units
Mafraq Hospital and Al Rahba Hospital have announced the opening of their new maternity assessment units to offer advice and treatment to women who are more than five months (20 weeks) pregnant. Mafraq Hospital is owned and operated by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), and Al Rahba Hospital is operated by SEHA and managed by Johns Hopkins Medicine International (JHMI).
The new four-bed maternity assessment units are an extension of the hospitals’ labour wards and will cater to the needs of expectant mothers who suffer from complications during their pregnancies. Patients will benefit from the new unit as it will save them time with the fast-track checkups, instead of having their cases referred to other departments such as the emergency department. The new unit will allow patients to immediately get the necessary advice and support and help determine whether the patients require an in-patient or out-patient service.
“Pregnancy is a phase that is both exciting and unsettling at the same time. Our multi-disciplinary teams of doctors and nurses at Mafraq Hospital and Al Rahba Hospital ensure hands-on expert advice and support to women throughout their pregnancies, and help ease concerns and questions of mothers-to-be”, said Dr Karim Elmasry, Consultant and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mafraq Hospital.
During 2013, there has been a 10 per cent increase in the number of babies delivered and a 40 per cent rise in gynaecology procedures conducted at Mafraq hospital. For the same period, Al Rahba Hospital also witnessed a 10 per cent increase in number of babies delivered and 8 per cent rise in the total number of gynaecology procedures conducted at the hospital “We are keen on delivering high quality services to our patients and meet the growing demand in maternity care, particularly women at early stages of their pregnancy. By end of 2014, we anticipate the total addition of more than eight consultants and many more midwives to both the maternity departments to help accommodate our growing services at these community hospitals.”
Lee Huntley, Chief Executive Officer, Mafraq Hospital, said, “At Mafraq Hospital, we value the feedback we receive from the community we operate in. It helps us shape the hospital’s existing services based on the needs of the patients. We recently conducted a customer satisfaction survey and the new unit is a result of our efforts to comply with the expectations of the local population. It aligns with our commitment to provide safe, high-quality and easily accessible maternity care to women.”
The maternity departments at Mafraq Hospital and Al Rahba Hospital offer state-of-the art services and midwife and consultant led patient care. The department at Mafraq has four leading gynaecology and obstetrics consultants and eight midwives, while the department Al Rahba has seven midwives.
Committed to providing high-quality patient care to their respective communities, the hospitals’ professional and compassionate midwifery team includes a mix of internationally experienced nurses and Emirati midwives, well-versed with the local culture and language. “Being hospitals that encourage UAE Nationals in healthcare, several Emirati nurses from the hospital are undergoing a structured midwifery training programme”, said Dr Elmasry.
As part of the hospital’s integrated approach to maternity service and women’s health care, Mafraq Hospital has recently appointed an experienced urogynaecology specialist.
