The National Cancer Program releases campaign videos calling for a movement against Cancer
The National Cancer Program (NCP), a collaboration between the Supreme Council of Health, Hamad Medical Corporation and Primary Health Care Corporation, recently released two videos featuring influential figures and activists in the Qatari society, highlighting the importance of cancer awareness, and calling upon everyone in Qatar to take action against this disease.
The first video titled “#QatarAgainstCancer” introduces NCP’s initial Cancer Champions; a group of high profile personalities in Qatar who endorse the program, promote healthy lifestyles and encourage cancer screening. The Cancer Champions are: Dera Al Dosari, well-known media consultant for the Ministry of Youth and Sports and TV presenter; Buthaina Al Ansari, HR Director of Ooredoo, and Founder and Chairperson of Qatariat; Wedad Al Kuwari, distinguished Qatari writer and screenwriter known for her popular gulf drama series; and Hassan Al Sai, well-known media personality known for hosting Qatar Radio’s “Watani Al Habib” and Qatar TV’s “Al Dar”. The video features the Cancer Champions demanding to “break the silence barrier” and asking people to summon their “courage” and “optimism” to fight cancer in the nation.
In a new video titled “I Pledge to Stand Up to Cancer”, NCP introduces five additional Cancer Champions who take a pledge to take every action to fight cancer in Qatar with the aim of raising cancer awareness in the country. The video features the famous Qatari singer Fahad Al Kubaisi; Katara’s active Public Relations Director Malika Al Shuraim; iLoveQatar’s co-founder Khalifa Saleh Al Haroon who is also Head of Interactive & Innovation at Vodafone Qatar; the popular Qatari stand-up comedian Hamad Al Amari and fashion designer Fahad Al Obaidly. In the video, the Cancer Champions take a pledge to do everything in their power to help Qatar in the battle against cancer, refute myths about cancer and to seek medical advice when needed. Most importantly, the Cancer Champions pledged to spread hope and courage among those fighting cancer.
To date, both videos have reached over 330,000 views on YouTube. The videos were also featured on Al Rayyan TV during Ramadan and will be screened in cinemas across Qatar as of September
Fiona Bonas, Director of National Cancer Program, Office of the Assistant Secretary General for Policy Affairs commented, “We are very impressed by the Cancer Champion’s enthusiasm and drive to carry on this national duty to stand up to cancer. Cancer is a battle best fought together, and it’s NCP’s vision to get everyone in the community involved to help reduce the number of cancer incidents in Qatar. We hope these videos will be a motivation to everyone to be cancer aware and support us in the fight against the disease.”
Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Thani, Director of Public Health at the Supreme Council of Health concluded, “This is an important moment for us, in which we officially start a nationwide movement to confront cancer in Qatar. We are grateful to our Cancer Champions for taking part in this noble initiative, and we hope through viral capabilities and unified efforts, the campaign videos will serve as a powerful and emotional tool that can be used to spread awareness and start a healthy conversation about cancer prevention and treatment.”
These videos were launched as part of NCP’s Cancer Myth Refutation Campaign, a movement that aims to debunk misconceptions, stigma and false facts surrounding cancer through educational initiatives and community engagement activities.
