Saudi Arabia’s National Centre for Diabetes has warned against the growing number of diabetes cases in the kingdom, and estimated the total spending on treatment of the disease at SR4bn a month, Saudi Gazette has reported. Head of the centre, Dr Zuhair Al-Ghuraibi, said the educational and preventive measures for countering the disease are insufficient and economic burdens are piling up daily. “The disease is causing direct economic burdens locally for the families. They include medicines and devices for monitoring the disease,” he said. “The economic burdens exceed SR12bn and the indirect effects exceed SR40bn annually, according to the recent local studies.”
