Sharjah International Book Fair set to participate in Book Expo America 2014
Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) has announced that it will be participating in Book Expo America (BEA), the largest annual book trade fair in the United States, which is taking place from 28 – 31 May at the Javits Centre in New York City.
The SIBF delegation attending the four-day event will be headed by SIBF Director Ahmed Al Ameri and will include Salim Omar Salim, Head of Sales and Marketing, and Faisal Al Nabouda, Sales Officer – International.
While BEA provides booksellers with opportunities to network with colleagues, preview publishers’ upcoming titles and discover new vendors, this year’s programme also includes a multitude of education and information sessions, as well as author breakfasts and pertinent panel discussions in the form of the Global Market Forum.
Both Al Ameri and Salim will be participating in the Global Market Forum, which is titled Books In Translation: Wanderlust for the Written Word; Al Ameri will form part of the panel on the topic What Editors Need to Know: Successful Translations into English while Salim will take part in the discussion on Funding Programs: Supporting Successful Translation of Books. In addition, SIBF has been invited to talk about its successes in terms of its Professional Programme and, in particular, the Translation Rights Centre, on the Translation Market Stage.
Commenting on SIBF’s participation in BEA, Ahmed Al Ameri, SIBF Director, said, “Book Expo America is a highlight on the annual calendar as it is one of the few events that continues to evolve – it is in every way reflective of the industry it serves. We are particularly excited about this year’s Global Market Forum, which previously served as an excellent platform for showcasing the Sharjah International Book Fair, and we believe that this year will offer similar opportunities.”
Salim Omar Salim, Head of Sales and Marketing at SIBF said, “SIBF’s participation in Book Expo America, will focus on establishing bridges of communication and introduce the ‘Translation Grant’ to American Authors, an initiative launched by the SIBF management and supported by the government of Sharjah, which aims to encourage the translation of books to and from the Arabic language to enrich Arabic and international Culture with valuable new knowledge and science related books.”
Book Expo America is the premier trade event for the North American publishing industry. This year’s edition will feature more than 500 authors and over 2 000 exhibitors, and is set to attract close to 30 000 people – a turnout unprecedented in the book fair’s history.
