Voucher Clubs and Grand Hyatt Doha team up to promote seat belt use for children
Road traffic injuries are one of the leading causes of death in Qatar. In fact, people are nine times more likely to die in a road traffic accident in Qatar than in the United States. In an effort to increase the use of seat belts, particularly for children, Voucher Clubs and the Grand Hyatt Doha have joined forces and printed 500 stickers which members of the public can place on their cars to help spread the message.
The simple fact is that wearing a seat belt significantly reduces the risk of injury or death in the event of a crash. Research by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of dying as a result of a car accident by 45%. In Qatar, in 2011, all children aged up to four years old who died in a motor vehicle crash were unrestrained front seat passengers. Not one death occurred for children of this age when travelling as restrained rear seat passengers.
“In 2012 I ran a similar campaign handing out free car stickers, and it’s wonderful to partner with the Grand Hyatt Doha this time. The use of car seats is something that many people, including me, feel very passionately about. As a mother of two young children, it’s especially difficult seeing children travelling around in cars unrestrained. Putting your child in a car seat, or strapping them in with a seat belt, is such as simple step, yet could potentially save their life in the event of an accident,” said Amanda Parker-Woods, founder of Voucher Clubs.
“Children’s safety is the single most important thought on any parents mind,” said the Grand Hyatt Doha’s General Manager Christoph K. Franzen. “And that’s why we chose to partner with Voucher Clubs this year and be part of this initiative.
