The great and the good of the contracting industry gathered in Dubai on Monday this week to discuss the resurgent UAE construction industry. The UAE Contractors Forum and Awards sought to outline the challenges that face the profession operating in a post crisis era.
It was apparent from the outset that the wounds from the real estate crash at the beginning of this decade have not been fully healed. Kez Taylor, CEO of ALEC, stated that, “Legacy contracts from the times of the crash need to be resolved before the industry can move forward.” He went on then to say, “The industry needs to be turned on its head, over the years it has become inefficient and lacks value.”
The honest assessment of the industry was continued by Bishoy Azmy, CEO of ASGC, as he highlighted that, “In recent times the relationship between stakeholders has been very antagonistic. This needs to change to ensure everyone’s success,” he continued, “I still believe that we have time to get the industry right but we need to figure out a plausible way to do it through teamwork.” The discussion was a precursor to a number of sessions that included discussions about contractor financing, the continued implementation of Building Information Modeling and strengthening the contractor-client relationship.
The proceedings of the forum were punctuated by the inaugural UAE Contractors Awards, which recognised excellence and outstanding achievement in the construction industry. Honours were bestowed in 4 categories this year which comprised of the Consultant of the Year, MEP Contractor of the Year, Contractor of the Year and CEO of the Year.
The consultant award was accepted on behalf of EC Harris by their Middle East CEO, John Williams, who said, “EC Harris is delighted to have received this award and is as extremely proud of successfully delivering the projects that led to this achievement.” The second award was for a specialist MEP contractor and was won by ALEMCO. On receipt of the award, the General Manager, Nathan Hanns said, “We are honoured to receive this award from IQPC. It is testament to the effort that our staff and labour have put into ALEMCO over the years. It is their pursuance of excellence and hard work that has made this possible.”
The top honour of Contractor of the Year was awarded to ALEC for their work on airports in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as well as the technically demanding work conducted in the delivery of Yas Waterworld, whilst demonstrating an exemplary safety record. Kez Taylor stated, “We are honoured to receive the Contractor of the Year Award. This would have not been possible without the hard work and dedication shown by all our employees.” The CEO of the Year award was bestowed upon Bishoy Azmy who oversaw the delivery of CityWalk, one of Dubai’s latest leisure attractions as well as helping the company win a number of new projects.
The UAE Contractors Forum was researched and developed by IQPC and was supported by a number of sponsors including Sigma Enterprises, Caparol, Colmef, Trojan Holdings, RMD Kwikform, Keller, Hard Precast Building Systems, RAK Precast, Sahara Emirates, Ischebeck Titan and Paschal Emirates.
