Dubai celebrates innovation with the Hamdan Bin Mohammad Award
Dubai has set up the Hamdan Bin Mohammad Award for Innovation in Project Management to recognise extraordinary achievements globally. Fitting indeed, seen as the emirate is often referred to as one of the most advanced cities in the world, thanks to a government that encourages innovation in all fields.
Last year, in a series of tweets, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said the emirate that we see today was born sometime in the 1960s, when his father Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum and he made a trip to New York and ascended the then world’s tallest building, the Empire State building in New York.
“We returned to Dubai fired with the dream that one day our city could be filled with such wonders as the world’s tallest building,” the tweets read.
“Now our dream is alive, with the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Holding/Emaar tower. New heights are in our road ahead,” Sheikh Mohammed said.
Unbelievable tale of Dubai
The Arabian Desert town metamorphosed into a global, smart, sustainable metropolis in the fastest evolution any city in the world has seen to date. Skyscrapers replaced date palms, and ports and airports mushroomed.
Dubai is now home to several world firsts and records, with the city emerging as a global hub for tourism, logistics and transportation in less than two decades.
It not only has the tallest building and the largest mall in the world, but many new, innovative developments, such as the world’s first 3D-printed office and the upcoming Hyperloop, that will transport passengers between Dubai and Abu Dhabi in 12 minutes, are in the pipeline.
Project management meets innovation
In the last decade, under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammed, Dubai built its metro rail network and a new airport, along with the Burj Khalifa, the world’s largest man-made island, Palm Jumeirah, a water canal and many other wonders.
Dubai has always looked to the future, but the speed at which it has emerged as a world-class hub for air travel is truly outstanding; Dubai International Airport is on course to soon become the world’s busiest for international passengers. While Dubai Metro has served nearly 850 million riders since it began service on September 9, 2009 and transports an average of 10 million commuters every month.
The city is also preparing itself to host Expo 2020, the first such mega event to take place in the region.
The driving force behind Dubai’s success is the Vision and strategic plan, enforced with well thought-out and innovative project management practices.
Robust mechanisms ensuring better management of projects are paving the way for the success of various initiatives in the city.
A thorough prior analysis, drafting the blueprint, anticipating the possible hurdles; all of these are the essential traits of project management. And for Dubai, new and futuristic innovation is a must-have ingredient of a recipe for success.
Innovation and sustainability have been the fuel for the emirate’s journey. It has never missed a chance to try something new and dynamic.
Furthermore, Dubai has been very particular about involving the best talent and the latest technology, starting from initiation to the close of projects.
