The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has released data on the UAE’s registrar market share, revealing the .ae domain name registration until January 2014. Through this step, the TRA aims to encourage local businesses to register for .ae domain names, which is the top level domain name (ccTLD) of the United Arab Emirates.
As of January 2014, 113,000 .ae domain names have been registered. The data also illustrates the stake each provider of domain names currently holds in the market. Etisalat continues to have the largest market share of 69.32% followed by Instra Corporation Pty Ltd 9.12% and AEserver 3.61%. There are now 21 accredited registrars with the aeDA registry.
The data also reveals that DURRAQ’s ‘Tasjeel.ae’ has the top growth rate of 30% between August 2013 and January 2014, followed by AESERVER at 25%, 101Domain Inc. at 9%, and both Instra Corporation Pty Ltd and IP Mirror at 8%.
“Our role is to serve the internet Community and we encourage local businesses to register with the .ae domain name and enjoy the benefits and flexibility of having such a domain. The .ae businesses will have much more options for names of their websites and makes it easier to search.” said Mohammad Al Zarooni, Acting Executive Director Policies and Program in the TRA. “Moreover, The UAE is recognized worldwide for its outstanding ICT infrastructure, its pioneering business community and its ability to create cutting edge and innovative online content. With more businesses registering with the .ae domain name, the UAE will have a stronger online presence,” added Al Zarooni.
The .ae Domain Administration (aeDA) was established in 2007 by the TRA as the regulatory body and registry operator for the (.ae) domain name. aeDA is responsible for enforcing all policies on the operation of the (.ae) country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) as well as overseeing the operation of the registry system. Its role is to develop and execute the domain administration policy; grow, develop and market the (.ae) namespace; accredit and manage (.ae) registrars; educate the public on the domain name, deliver and promote the domain name; facilitate the (.ae) Dispute Resolution Policy; and represent (.ae) at international forums.
