Zain Group’s participation at the GSM Association’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona last week was exceptionally successful as the company’s impressive hospitality suite attracted hundreds of industry professionals representing the entire telecom value chain, keen to showcase their commercial propositions and technology offerings or to discuss strategic partnerships with Zain.
It was also fulfilling for Zain as the company welcomed several Telecom Ministers and Regulators to its booth and chose to make a number of announcements around several community initiatives as well as highlighting a number of agreements that reinforce Zain’s position as a leading customer-oriented telecom provider in the region.
Zain Group Chairman, Asaad Al Banwan and Zain Saudi Arabia Chairman, Fahd bin Ibrahim al-Dughaither participated in several activities and meetings held at the hospitality suite, joining Zain Group CEO, Scott Gegenheimer and several country operation CEOs, namely Omar Al Omar from Zain Kuwait, Elfatih Erwa from Zain Sudan, Hassan Kabbani from Zain Saudi Arabia, Ahmad Hanandeh from Zain Jordan, Mohammed Zainalabdein from Bahrain and Basel Manasrah from South Sudan and other high ranking Zain senior executives from across the company’s regional footprint.
More than 85,000 visitors from 201 countries attended the 2014 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, setting another new record for the mobile industry’s premier event. More than 1,800 exhibiting companies showcased cutting edge products and services with 3,800 international media and industry analysts attending to report on the many significant industry announcements made at the Congress.
Notable visitors to the Zain hospitality suite to discuss pertinent matters included the Bahrain Minister for Communications H. E. Sheikh Fawaz Bin Mohamed Al Khalifa and the Director General of the Kingdom’s Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, Mr Mohammed Hamad Bubshait, as well as the Governor of Saudi Arabia’s Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC), Eng. Abdallah Al Darrab. Additionally the South Sudan Minister of Telecommunications & Postal Services, the Hon. Rebecca Joshua Okwachi visited the Zain suite to hold discussions with Zain management and so did chess grandmaster and former world champion Gary Kasparov.
During the Congress, Zain also held talks with representatives from leading technology solution providers including Huawei, Ericsson, NSN, Google, Facebook, Samsung, Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, SAP and Oracle and operators including Vodafone, Deutsche Telecom and SK Telecom amongst many others.
Commenting on Zain’s presence at the 2014 MWC, Zain Chairman Asaad Al Banwan said: “We are proud to participate in this significant telecom event, along with all the other market leaders and innovators represented here. Our purpose for being present is to highlight our participation and support of this dynamic industry of ours, and to be able to meet with many of our peers and partners, exchange ideas, and gather knowledge.”
Zain Group CEO Scott Gegenheimer was a speaker and panelist at one of the sessions at the Congress entitled “Making Business Transformation Work”.
Reflecting on Zain’s presence at MWC, the Group CEO, commented: “The Zain team really felt the energy of the show, and I believe we injected some of our own into the proceedings. Telecommunications is an incredibly exciting and rapidly changing industry and it is important to remain connected to it and tell our own story at such gatherings.”
As an exhibitor at the 2014 MWC and to forge closer ties with the local community, Zain provided complimentary passes to 45 masters’ students from the Esade Business School of Barcelona to attend the congress. This move proved to be extremely successful as the students participated in several of Zain’s activities at the hospitality suite interacting with and seeking guidance from many of the Zain executive team and also acting as ambassadors for Zain during the annual leading industry event.
One highlight from Zain’s participation at the leading industry event was the holding of a press conference to announce the launch of its in-depth report, “The Socio-Economic Impact of Mobile Telecommunication in the MENA Region”.
Zain also launched and previewed its ‘Drive Zain’ safety campaign, and announced that in partnership with Refugees United and Ericsson, it would be providing a family reconnection service to more than 500,000 displaced Syrians residing in Jordan. In addition, Zain entered into a MoU with ARBooster to roll-out Personal Premium Number, an innovative, revenue-generating service.
Zain’s participation coincided with the celebration of the company’s 30th anniversary of operation and during the 2014 MWC, Zain’s management team took the opportunity to have multiple brain-storming sessions to seek ways to implement and enhance several of the new strategic directions Zain is taking in relation to customer experience, operational effectiveness, business growth and people development.
