Du joins global consortium to build 20,000-km undersea cable
UAE telecoms operator du has said it has joined an international consortium to build a 20,000 km undersea cable system stretching between Southeast Asia to Europe, Gulf News has reported. The Sea-Me-We 5 will connect 15 countries and will branch to the UAE through du’s landing station in Fujairah. It is expected to start carrying commercial traffic by early 2016. Fully loaded, it is capable of carrying 24,000 Gbps of capacity (or the equivalent of transmitting about 4,800 high-definition movies per second). It is designed to provide upgradable transmission facilities by adopting 100 Gigabytes per second (Gbps) technology.
