Global smartphone shipments jumped to 1bn last year: IDC
According to a new report by IDC, global sales of smartphones maintained its strong performance in 2013, with consumers buying more than one billion handsets during the year, compared with 725 million handsets sold in the previous year, PC World has reported. Around 79% of smartphones shipped last year were running Android, IDC said. Apple devices accounted for just over 15% of shipments at 153 million, up 13% on the previous year, while Windows Phone shipments rose to 33 million, just under double what they were in 2012. BlackBerry OS saw its market share fall by 40% to 19 million handsets, the report said.
