TRA sponsors employee to gain doctorate overseas
As part of its ongoing employee development program, the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) sponsors a number of its staff every year to pursue further education opportunities both domestically and overseas.
The latest employee to receive academic sponsorship from the TRA is Saeed Al Katheeri, a Senior Regulatory Economist at TRA, who recently has satisfied the examiners for the award of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the economics of the telecommunications industry at the University of East Anglia.
“The entire TRA is incredibly proud of Saeed’s achievement having gained his doctorate from a highly reputable international academic institution. The knowledge and insight he has gained whilst studying in the UK will without doubt prove invaluable to our objectives at the TRA and we welcome him back to the Emirates to work on some our most importance ICT regulatory projects,” said H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General.
“As an UAE Government entity, the continuous professional and educational development of our staff is of the utmost importance for the TRA. As the entire nation continues on its path towards a fully pledged knowledge based economy, the importance of harnessing the potential of Emirati talent is heightened. With that in mind, the TRA looks forward to expanding its academic sponsorship program for staff in the near future,” he added.
In line with his current position in the TRA’s Regulatory Affairs division, the title of Saeed’s PhD thesis is ‘The Economics of Mobile International Roaming’ and copies of the research were shared with senior officials within the TRA. In 2008, the TRA sponsored three of its employees to pursue higher education qualifications, with two completing their Master’s degree and Saeed going on to complete his PhD.
This support is part of the TRA plans in Emiratization process, believing in the Emirati competencies and the efficiency of their experiences and to ensure their effective contribution in operating and managing the action plans, their roles and responsibilities. This year has witnessed a marked increase in the numbers of Emirati workforce within the TRA, currently the Emiratization rate is 80%.
