With more than one in ten adults in Oman suffering from diabetes and increasing numbers being afflicted by complications linked to lifestyle choices every year, Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz-Carlton Hotel, teamed up with the Oman Diabetes Association on Saturday, March 8, 2014 to host the second annual ‘Ritz-Carlton Diabetes Camp’ for children and their families.
As a keen driver of social awareness in the Sultanate, Al Bustan Palace held the event to educate children suffering from juvenile diabetes on how to live healthier lifestyles, better manage their condition and also to allow them to have some fun. Over 50 children, along with supporters of the Oman Diabetes Association, gathered for the day, which included activities such as morning exercise, yoga for kids, tennis, mini-football, sailing with catamarans and other games. The children also learned how to make healthy salads to suit the unique dietary requirements associated with juvenile diabetes.
Working under the auspices of the Oman Ministry of Social Affairs, the Oman Diabetes Association provides support for people suffering from the metabolic disease as it also raises awareness within the wider community.
The event was held under the umbrella of The Ritz-Carlton’s global Community Footprints social and environmental responsibility program, which focuses on creating a positive impact on child wellbeing, in addition to promoting environmental responsibility and assisting in alleviating hunger and poverty.
Bernard Viola, General Manager of Al Bustan Palace, said: “We take the focus of our Community Footprints program very seriously as it is a social and environmental responsibility that will shape our legacy – and our future. I am immensely proud of the contributions made by our Ladies and Gentlemen to the local communities that we are part of. Diabetes is a very serious but highly manageable condition and anything we can do to build awareness, especially amongst children, is significant.”
Al Bustan Palace has been an integral part of Omani society for more than 29 years and under the Community Footprints program, the hotel’s staff have been actively engaged with different projects which have helped inspire and positively impact the lives of others. Among the highlights were a first-of-its-kind chocolate painting auction to raise funds for children with disabilities, and a party to mark International Children’s Day for the benefit of sick children.
