The team of managers from the BurJuman Arjaan by Rotana in Dubai set out to clean up the desert in Al Khawaneej area which witnesses huge crowds of campers every winter. The objective of the campaign was to help preserve a clean habitat for animals such as camels that often eat the litter & plastic, which causes death due to non-digestion, or more often get injured from the waste. In addition, the clean-up campaign highlighted the cultural and environmental values of the deserts that UAE consists of, therefore creating awareness and aiming to encourage the individuals to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.
The campaign was organized with support of Small Horse Corporation that offers unique desert trail rides including horse safaris and camel riding out in the desert. Khalid Bin Dhabboi, owner of the corporation said: “We are glad to see interest from the responsible employees of Rotana who have put together such an event right after the camping season to clean-up our splendid golden desert.’
Furthermore, the team from BurJuman Arjaan by Rotana worked hand-in-hand alongside the horses from the stables, managing to clean up a 5km range with more than 45 kilograms of litter and non-biodegradable waste. Horses have no environmental impact on the desert lands and actually using them for such unique campaigns helped in maneuvering on dunes and easily spotting waste that otherwise might not have been seen from a lower altitude.
Chantel Moore, general manager of the hotel, commented: “This was a truly unique experience with the team who bravely took the initiative of a desert clean-up with horses, thanks to our partner who contributed to the success of this event. We as Rotana are very much committed to environmental sustainability and hope such campaigns create awareness amongst desert entertainers to protect the habitat of animals and the beautiful nature surrounding us.”
