Dubai Municipality, joining with Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing organized a workshop on food safety in desert camps at Al-Murooj Rotana hotel recently.
Sultan Al Taher, head of food inspection section at Dubai Municipality, Majid Al-Marri, Director of hotel classification department and Shaikha Al-Motawwi, director of business development department at Dubai Tourism attended in the program.
More than 60 delegates representing companies that run camps and desert safaris participated in the workshop.
Sultan Al- Taher in his address stressed the need to abide with food safety standards and specifications when prepare food in camps.
“Workers who prepare food should be maintaining personal hygiene as well as be well aware of healthy practises in the field,” he said. He stressed, “The need to obtain activity permits from economic development department as well as urged businesses to undergo routine inspections from food control department of municipality.”
Mr. Sultan observed, “Number of desert tourists as well as tourism service providers are increasing each year, so, abiding food safety laws and regulations are of high importance.” He said, “The business should never go down the ‘Very Good’ category, else they will fail to get permits.”
Mr. Majid in his speech highlighted the important role played by tourism sector as well as tourism service providers in the overall development of the emirate.
Mrs. Shaikha, in her presentation detailed about the concept of sustainable tourism and its key role in the economy. She also introduced the gathering about Green Tourism award constituted for tourism businesses and hotels and how it contributes in positively changing the health and safety practices.
She pointed, “Desert camps are going to be included in the hotel category from the next edition.” She also detailed about the criteria and requirements for desert camps to be considered for the award.
