Dubai Holding plans to build Mall of the World to coincide with the influx of tourists expected for Expo 2020.
The world’s first temperature-controlled ‘city within a city’ will house the world’s largest shopping mall in an attempt to transform Dubai into a global tourist hub. Located on the Sheikh Zayed Road, the development will also include the world’s largest indoor theme park, 100 hotels and services apartments, a three-million-square-feet Wellness District and a seven-kilometre pedestrian retail stretch. Most impressively, however, all of these facilities will be setup within a temperature-controlled surrounding to adapt to Dubai’s harsh summer months.
Although officials are yet to announce the cost of the project, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, says: “We are confident of our economy’s strength, optimistic about our country’s future and we continue to broaden our vision.”
The prime factor behind this development is to cater to the regional tourism industry that will no longer be seasonal. “Tourism is key driver of our economy and we aim to make the UAE an attractive destination all-year long. This is why we will start working on providing pleasant temperature-controlled environments during the summer months,” adds His Highness. “We plan to transform Dubai into a cultural, tourist and economic hub for the two billion people living in the region around us.”
Questions have been raised as to the demand for a new retail mega structure, considering Dubai already houses the world’s largest retail destination, The Dubai Mall. Nonetheless, reports that several brands have failed to gain retail space within it, as well as unique pedestrian and temperature-controlled features of the Mall of the World have seemingly justified its establishment.
