Bad weather hits operations at Kuwait airport and ports

* 14 flights re-routed at Kuwait International Airport

* Kuwait has shut Shuweikh, Shuaiba and Doha ports due to bad weather

* Emirates cancelled a flight from Oman after a snake was found in a cargo hold

Worsening weather conditions had affected flight operations in Kuwait’s airport and all three ports, state news agency KUNA reported on Monday.

The country had re-routed 14 incoming flights due to bad weather conditions, the agency said, quoting the country’s civil aviation authority.

Flights were re-routed to airports in Damam, Doha and Manama since 0400 local time until visibility is restored, the statement said.

However, the first flights have resumed to Kuwait International Airport at 0700 local time, the statement added.

Ports closed

Kuwait has also shut Shuweikh, Shuaiba and Doha ports temporarily due to bad weather.

The ports are expected to resume activity once weather conditions and visibility improve, Kuna said, quoting the country’s port authority.

Weather quagmire

Dense fog has continued to disrupt operations at various GCC airports for the past few weeks. On New Year’s eve dozens of flights were cancelled, delayed or diverted to neighbouring airports due to low visibility leaving hundreds of travellers stranded at Dubai International Airport.

Two days earlier, Bahrain International Airport had to close its runway due to heavy fog and nearly 2,000 passengers were reportedly affected by the closure.

Snake on board

Earlier on Monday, Dubai’s Emirates Airline cancelled a flight after a snake was found in a cargo hold. The reptile was discovered on Sunday prior to passengers boarding the flight.

“Flight EK0863 from Muscat to Dubai on 8 January 2017 was cancelled due to a detection of a snake in the cargo hold prior to passengers boarding,” local media reported quoting an unmanned airline spokeswoman.

“Engineering and cleaning teams are working to clear the aircraft to re-enter service. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” she added.
