Traders Hotel, Dubai supports global communities through ‘Soap for Hope’ programme
Traders Hotel, Dubai (THDB) announces its participation as one of nine hotels in the UAE in Sealed Air Diversey Care’s ‘Soap for Hope’ programme. Driven by its core values and strongly committed to its sustainability goals, Traders Hotel, Dubai collaborates with Diversey Care to improve the personal hygiene and better quality of life of impoverished neighbourhoods in such countries as Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Kenya.
The Soap for Hope, which started in 2013, is an innovative approach to recycling used soaps into fresh soap bars and distributing them to the underprivileged populace. Traders Hotel, Dubai’s involvement in this scheme strengthens its environmental efforts in reducing waste and supporting global communities in Asia and Africa that benefit from the Soap for Hope livelihood project.
The project engages people living in crowded slums in the process of making soaps using basic equipment and a modern cold-press method. The soaps are then bought by local companies, thereby providing a source of income for the slum dwellers. In return, all residents also receive free soap for their own use, thus raising hygiene levels and reducing the risk of illness among the whole community, particularly the children who fall sick simply because they are unable to practise proper hand-washing.
With this joint undertaking delivering real and lasting change to local communities, Traders Hotel, Dubai further upholds its mission of practicing social responsibility on a worldwide scale and inspiring others to do the same.
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts remains committed to operating in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner while balancing the interests of diverse stakeholders. In striving to be a leader in corporate citizenship and sustainable development, a corporate-level CSR Committee drives the company’s initiatives in the strategic areas of stakeholder relations, environment, health and safety, supply chain and employees. Under the umbrella of sustainability, Shangri-La’s social responsibility programme consists of the two elements of ’embrace’ and ‘sanctuary’.
Embrace focuses on Shangri-La’s Care for People Project, which aims to promote the highest level of education and health support in underprivileged communities. In sanctuary, the programme concentrates on Shangri-La’s Care for Nature Project, which promotes the conservation and restoration of biodiversity.
