SKMC announces new appointments bringing international healthcare expertise to the UAE
SKMC is part of the SEHA HealthSystem and is owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Haider-Shah, a neurointerventional radiologist and trained in minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures, joined the SKMC team. He is a graduate of McGill University Faculty of Medicine and trained at the University of Michigan and Henry Ford Hospitals. Dr. Haider-Shah is also the only fellowship trained consultant in neuro-intervention in the UAE.
Neuro-intervention is a new specialty at SKMC for the advanced treatment of stroke, aneurysms and other neurosurgical conditions. He has performed over 400 neuro-interventional cases throughout his years of experience. He also has fellowship training and a broad range of experience in vascular and interventional radiology, and Interventional Pain Procedures such as Pain Injection therapies including implantable stimulators and intrathecal pain pumps.
He holds the American Board of Radiology and is a member in the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery, Society of Interventional Radiology, World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and North American Spine Society.
Also, joining the team at SKMC in the field of Interventional Radiology is Dr. Asim Khwaja, who received his medical degree from Boston University, USA in 1994. He did his residency in diagnostic radiology from Rhode Island Hospital, USA and obtained his fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at Brown University in 2000. He has a broad range of experience in vascular procedures, including uterine fibroid embolization, varicose vein treatment, Deep Venous Thrombosi (DVT) treatment, and endovascular treatment of peripheral arterial disease.
He is also very active in interventional oncology with extensive experience in ablation of kidney, lung and liver tumors and as well as tumor embolizations. He is a diplomat of the American Board in Diagnostic Radiology with additional board certification in Vascular and Interventional Radiology and is a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology and American College of Radiology. With over 10 years experience, he most recently was a Chairman of Radiology and Chief of the Interventional Radiology Service at Banner Desert Medical Center in Arizona, USA.
Dr. Maan Taba has joined SKMC’s Orthopedics Department. Dr. Taba has extensive experience in lower limb (foot and ankle) surgeries. He holds a Master Degree in Surgery from Complutense University, Madrid; and he is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a member of the British Foot and Ankle Society. He previously worked in Basildon University Foundation Trust, and Barnet Hospital in London.
Dr. Taba was the first to introduce minimally invasive surgery in foot and ankle procedures in the UK, which he will continue to perform at SKMC. For the past three years, he has been working on a research in applying Botulinum Toxin in sport medicine problems like Achilles tendinitis and chronic plantar faciitis. Dr. Taba is an expert in total ankle replacement procedures in the UK and will be performing the first case at SKMC during the first quarter of 2011. SKMC’s Orthopedics Department treats all variety of complex calcaneal fractures using state-of-the-art techniques including minimally invasive surgery and 3D CT scan intraoperatively.
With the growth of SKMC’s Emergency Medicine Department, a remarkable Emergency Medicine Consultant joined the cadre. Dr. Robert J. Hoffman has 20 years of experience practicing emergency medicine in academic medical centers in New York City prior to joining SKMC. His medical training is in general pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, and medical toxicology and has a graduate school degree in Clinical Research Methods & Biostatistics. Dr. Hoffman has over 100 publications in his specialty fields broadly published. Dr. Hoffman is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, American College of Medical Toxicology, and American Academy of Pediatrics. With the arrival of Dr. Hoffman, a medical toxicology consultation service at SKMC was established, the first of its kind in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates.
A Nephrology Consultant, Dr. Ammar Abdulbaki, has recently joined SKMC. Dr. Abdulbaki obtained his Nephrology Fellowship and Transplant Fellowship from St. John Hospital and Medical Center, Michigan. Prior to joining SKMC in November 2010, Dr. Abdulbaki practiced clinical nephrology and transplant in Genesys Regional Medical Center in Michigan; then worked at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Saudi Arabia for the past six years.
He holds several certificates and boards including Internal Medicine Board Certification, Nephrology Board Certification and Renal Transplant Physician Certificate (AST). Dr. Abdulbaki is an active member in several American societies.
Furthermore, Dr. Abdelkarim Waness, Internal Medicine Consultant, joined SKMC bringing with him a wealth of experience. He holds certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and has been involved extensively in clinical research. He has 23 years of combined experience in general internal medicine, critical care, cardiology, rheumatology and dermatology. He did his residency program and fellowship in Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. He has worked in multiple renowned hospitals in the United States and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dr. Waness has special interest in medical research and lipid disorders.
A Home Care Consultant, Dr. Ali Amin Akhtar, has lately joined the Home Care Program at SKMC. Dr. Akhtar has more than 10 years of experience and served in several leadership positions such as the Director at the Memorial Hospitalist Service in USA and the Medical Director in Memorial Hospital Home Care, USA. He was also appointed in several academic positions. Dr. Akhtar obtained the American Board of Internal Medicine in 2001.
Dr. Imran Mirza joined SKMC in summer of 2010 as Pathology Consultant. He obtained his Medical Degree from University of The Punjab, Pakistan and his Masters Degree in Microbiology from George Washington University, USA. He did his residency training in Pathology at Yale University affiliated program and his fellowship training at Cleveland Clinic, USA. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 2002 (FRCPC Gen, Path). He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Hematology and Molecular Genetic Pathology. Prior to joining SKMC, he was a Consultant hematopathologist and Associate Professor for over 9 years at the University of Alberta Hospitals, Canada. Dr. Mirza was also directing the Molecular Pathology Laboratory at the University of Alberta Hospitals since 2006, a role which he will continue as the Section Head of the Molecular Pathology at SKMC.
